ASHBURN — Jamin Davis will return to court Thursday after a Virginia judge rejected a reckless driving plea agreement stemming from a March 2022 incident in which the Washington Commanders linebacker was cited going 114 mph in a 45 mph zone.
Davis, a third-year linebacker for Washington, appeared Monday in court where Judge Stephen E. Sincavage rejected a plea agreement that called for the 24-year-old to serve no more than eight days of active incarceration. Davis is appealing an original ruling from the Loudoun County District Court that found him guilty, suspended his license and sentenced him to serve 30 days in jail.
On March 28, 2022, officials cited Davis with a Class 1 misdemeanor related to reckless driving on Loudoun County Parkway at Evergreen Ridge Drive at 1 p.m.. The misdemeanor can carry a sentence of up to 12 months in jail, and/or a fine of up to $2,500.
The charge was also Davis’ second reckless driving-related offense in a three-month period. On Dec. 19, 2021, Davis was cited for reckless driving after going 89 mph in a 65-mph zone. Davis, whose charge was amended to an infraction for going 84 in a 65, pleaded guilty and agreed to pay a $150 fine.
Davis’ 2021 ticket came just days before teammate Deshazor Everett was involved in a fatal car crash that killed Everett’s girlfriend, Olivia Peters. Davis was reportedly on the scene of the accident as he and cornerback Benjamin St-Juste were driving in a car behind Everett.
Davis missed the Commanders’ practice Monday to attend court.
“He’s going through the legal process,” Commanders coach Ron Rivera said, “as he goes through it, we just got to be here and be supportive of him and understand that this is the legal process that he has to go through.”
Davis’ hearing Thursday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Washington Post, which first reported Davis’ case, reported that Sincavage noted the heavily trafficked area, time of day and Davis’ “not terrible but not clean” driving record as reasons for rejecting the plea agreement.
Davis’ attorney had withdrawn his client’s original request for a jury trial and instead introduced the plea deal that was reached with prosecutors.
The Commanders drafted Davis with the 19th overall pick in 2021. The Kentucky product has since started 23 games and appeared in 32 games.
