Warning: This post contains spoilers for Supernatural
Summary
- Lilith’s fear of the demon-killing knife in Supernatural season 4 may have been an act to manipulate Sam and Dean into thinking they had an advantage.
- The demon-killing knife, while effective against low-level demons, was largely useless against more powerful demons like Alistair and Lilith.
- Lilith, as the first demon ever created, likely couldn’t be killed by the knife, but it may have still caused her pain, which she wanted to avoid showing in front of Sam and Dean.
Dean and Sam Winchester used the demon-killing knife often during Supernatural’s run, but the weapon may have also created a season 4 plot hole that remains confusing. Lilith is easily one of the most memorable villains to go up against Sam and Dean. The character was portrayed by different actresses over the course of Supernatural’s 15-season, first as a child and later as a young woman.
Introduced in Supernatural season 3, Lilith was a force to be reckoned with. Throughout season 4, she was a veritable threat whose death was the final step in unleashing Lucifer upon the world. The demon-killing knife, when utilized correctly, could kill all sorts of demons. Stabbing a more powerful demon could result in some irritation, but impaling them in the right spot would end their lives for good. While the demon-killing knife wasn’t used on Lilith, she was scared of the weapon Dean and Sam carried with them. But why was Lilith, strong as she was as the first demon ever created, terrified of a knife that killed lesser demons?
Why Was Lilith Afraid Of Sam & Dean’s Demon-Killing Knife?
Sam and Dean were armed with the demon-killing knife, which proved handy. It was faster than an exorcism, and was guaranteed to kill all low-level demons. However, the demon-killing knife, when dispatched against powerful demons like Alistair, proved to be rather futile. And yet, throughout Supernatural season 4, Lilith kept away from the demon-killing knife despite the fact that she was more powerful than Alistair and even Crowley. If even the Knights of Hell, who were immensely powerful, were at least partially immune to it, then it stands to reason that the demon-killing knife was never really a serious threat to her.
Lilith was the first demon created, and having her being taken out by a knife would have been quite uneventful. What’s more, Lilith revealed she could stop Sam — and anyone else — from using the knife with her powers. And yet, she still avoided it whenever she could. It’s possible Lilith couldn’t be killed by the demon blade, but it could still cause her some pain, which is likely not what she wanted. To have shown any actual pain in front of Sam and Dean would have been detrimental to her efforts, and baring her weaknesses in front of them would not have been ideal.
Explaining Supernatural’s Season 4 Lilith Plot Hole
Sam suggests Lilith is afraid of the knife, but he assumes that’s the case because all other demons are. What’s the real explanation? Despite pretending to be an ally to Sam, the demon Ruby had been working with Lilith the whole time. With that in mind, it’s possible Lilith was actually putting on an act — it wouldn’t have been the first time she’s done it. Lilith was nothing if not manipulative.
Lilith probably knew the demon-killing knife couldn’t kill her, but she acted like she was scared of it so that Dean and Sam believed they had a leg up during the events of Supernatural season 4. Sam was desperate to kill Lilith, so why not let him think that he could, at least for a while? After all, it was Ruby who introduced the demon-killing knife, and she wouldn’t have utilized it knowing that it could actually kill Lilith when the demon needed her to die by Sam’s hand to release Lucifer.
