Warning: spoilers for Good Omens season 2Good Omens star Michael Sheen has provided his thoughts about the show’s season 2 finale, and what it means for Aziraphale and Crowley’s evolving relationship. In a moment that was previously spoiled for many by Prime Video’s own marketing team, the last few moments of Good Omens season 2 saw David Tennant’s demon Crowley kiss his long-time friend and companion. However, despite viewers’ hopes to see the two become romantically involved, Aziraphale’s decision to become heaven’s new Supreme Archangel would tear the two apart.
Speaking with TVLine, Sheen explains that the long-awaited kiss is just a part of a developing relationship between the pair that series creator Neil Gaiman takes “incredibly seriously”. The Aziraphale actor suggests that while the two seem like completely opposite characters, their shared history demonstrates that they are connected in many different ways. Sheen also hints that season 2’s shocking finale “doesn’t finish the story”, instead “it’s the start of another story” that sets up Good Omens season 3. Check out his comments below:
Following how that relationship develops is something that audiences have really gotten into. So we’ve taken that very seriously, and Neil takes it incredibly seriously. Obviously, on the surface, they seem like they’re complete opposites. And yet, clearly they’re compelled toward each other in all kinds of ways.
Will Aziraphale And Crowley Get Their Happy Ending?
While it was never made explicit in either Good Omens season 1, or the original book on which it was based, large numbers of the show’s fandom lobbied to see Aziraphale and Crowley become a romantic couple. So popular was the concept of the characters’ pairing that the duo had even come to be known as “ineffable husbands” in online circles.
Prior to the release of Good Omens season 1, Gaiman as the original co-author of the book, repeatedly suggested that any interpretation of the pair’s relationship was best left to the readers. With the property’s TV adaptation, Gaiman clearly appears to have changed his position and has set the stage for season 3 to further explore Aziraphale and Crowley’s potential romance. Though season 2’s fateful kiss did not end the way viewers may have hoped, it does pave the way for future episodes to build on having Crowley finally come to understand his feelings for his angelic counterpart.
At this stage, there is no official confirmation that Good Omens season 3 will be greenlit, and given the current strike action affecting Hollywood, it may be some time before such an announcement is made. According to Gaiman, Good Omens season 3 has already been planned out and will likely focus on the second coming teased during the last moments of the season 2 finale. Beyond the return of the Messiah, most viewers will be hoping to see Aziraphale and Crowley finally come together as a couple.
