Earlier today, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Flip5, one of many devices presented at its latest Galaxy Unpacked event. Sporting more or less the same design as the Galaxy Z Flip4, the Galaxy Z Flip5 has the same battery capacity as its predecessor but with a more efficient Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chipset. Arguably the biggest change between the Galaxy Z Flip4 and Galaxy Z Flip5 is the cover display, which grows from 1.9-inches to 3.5-inches.
Additionally, the Galaxy Z Flip5 was expected to be the first in the series to support Samsung DeX, the company’s desktop mode. Seemingly, the rumour originated with SamMobiles, who seemed confident that Samsung would add the functionality this time around, despite providing no evidence to suggest that this would be the case. For reference, Motorola already offers a serviceable equivalent in the Razr 40 Ultra/Razr Plus, which it markets as Motorola Ready For.
Unfortunately, it seems that Samsung is unwilling or unable to bring its desktop mode software to the Galaxy Z Flip series. While the company has not confirmed as much, popular YouTuber Michael Fisher in a reply on Twitter. Considering that the Galaxy Z Flip5 has the same chipset as the larger Galaxy Z Fold5, it seems that this is not a hardware limitation. Instead, we suspect that Samsung is using DeX to help segment its two new foldables.
