Smartphones powered by the upcoming Dimensity 9300 flagship processor are already projected to be faster and compatible with the latest RAM type already. Now, they are also slated to start bringing artificially-generated content (or AIGC) production to the masses, with on-board support for the “next-generation open-source LLM” Llama 2 from Meta.
The OEM thus intends to follow Qualcomm in bringing on-device generative AI to handsets, “a significant trend in digital transformation,” according to JC Hsu, MediaTek Wireless Communications Business Unit’s Corporate Senior Vice President and General Manager.
The 9300 is thus rated to start providing “Llama 2 developers and users with the tools needed to fully innovate in the AI space”, even in conditions of reduced connectivity and with greater privacy and stability.
The SoC is backed to do so with a software stack optimized for the LLM, not to mention an APU further enhanced with Transformer backbone acceleration, so that using the model should consume less DRAM bandwidth and processing capacity.
AIGC on next-gen MediaTek-powered mobile devices should also benefit from the processor’s integrated NeuroPilot platform. The chip designer projects that the first AI apps based on Llama 2 will be ready to meet their compatible Dimensity 9300-powered devices on the market by the end of 2023.

I became a professional writer and editor shortly after graduation. My degrees are in biomedical sciences; however, they led to some experience in the biotech area, which convinced me of its potential to revolutionize our health, environment and lives in general. This developed into an all-consuming interest in more aspects of tech over time: I can never write enough on the latest electronics, gadgets and innovations. My other interests include imaging, astronomy, and streaming all the things. Oh, and coffee.
