The mullet has been an iconic and controversial hairdo since the 70s – but in recent years, it’s seen a huge comeback.

And now children from across the US have vied to be named the National Mullet Champ in an annual competition which takes place every year.

The competition first ran in 2020 and has occurred every summer since. This year, the winner with the boldest hair cut was deemed to be a six-year-old boy from Pennsylvania.

Rory Ehrlich, from Montgomery County, who has nicknamed his mullet cheddar wiz, got over 16,000 votes in the contest and beat hundreds of other contestants to the top prize.

But he did have strong competition.

Greyson Woods of New York and his mullet nicknamed ‘Baby Joe Dirt’ made the Top 25 in the USA Mullet Championships 2023 Kids Division

Photos submitted online from across the country show an array of styles with different names.

The public voted for their favourite, while a panel of judges also evaluated the mullets based on length, style, uniqueness, and showmanship.

In second place was Ezekiel Arita, three, of Hawaii – with his dark mullet nicknamed Mr. Aloha Mullet.

And in third place was Kamden Cunningham, five, of Pennsylvania and his mullet nicknamed The Kammander.

Other contenders were Eli Powell, three, of Kansas and his mullet nicknamed Ginger Mane – he came fifth.

Tristan Bowling, three, from Kentucky also made it into the top 25 with his lofty hairstyle called Hot Rod.

Mason Padilla, 11, of California and his mullet nicknamed The Chick Magnet finished in 8th place in the USA Mullet Championships 2023 Kids Division.

In addition to the Kids and Teens contests, the organization also runs a Femulet competition (which ran in May), as well as the upcoming Men’s Mullet and 55+ Mullet.

The winners receive a cash prize and swag from the sponsors of the competition. They also get a USA Mullet Championships trophy.

The kid’s winner Rory has helped raise over $1,000 to support former NFL star Jared Allen’s Homes For Wounded Warriors charity, which helps build accessible and mortgage-free homes for critically injured US Military Veterans.

And he has said he will use his own prize money of $5,000 to buy his older sister an alpaca.

Rory Ehrlich, from Montgomery County, was competing in the children’s division and beat hundreds of other contestants to the top prize.

His mother Airen Ehrlich said he first decided to grow a mullet a year ago when he visited the barbershop ‘because it looks cool’.

He was asked to name his mullet as a part of entering the competition and he decided to call it ‘chedder wiz’ which is his favorite way to order a Philly cheesesteak.

Rory decided to raise money for Homes For Wounded Warriors because his father is a retired Air Force veteran.

The youngster jumped for joy when he found out he was a winner.

His mother said he wrecked the kitchen as he ran around to celebrate.

‘My chair fell down,’ Rory told CBS News, before adding that he will use the winnings to ‘buy my sister an alpaca’. But his mother quickly shut that idea down.

He also wants to go on a wing night following his triumph at this year’s competition.

‘We really relied on the community and the city, Philadelphia, they came in so clutch with this,’ Airen said.

‘I still feel totally overwhelmed with emotions. The support is beyond what you can actually put into words.’

She said a lot of the votes came through at the last minute and the competition organizers had to check they were actually real.

Rory has no plans to change his hairstyle after his success and wants to keep the mullet.
