Original Ghostbusters star Dan Aykroyd provides some sequel details following Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2, hinting that the team could go international in future entries. Aykroyd portrayed the team’s paranormal expert in the original 1984 movie and has since reprised the role for 1989’s sequel Ghostbusters II, 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, as well as provided his voice for the character in two videogames. Ghostbusters: Afterlife reintroduced the franchise to audiences through the Spengler family’s dealing with the paranormal when they move to a quiet town in Oklahoma.
While the wait will be longer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2‘s release due to a potential delay, Aykroyd has opened up to the Daily Mail about his experiences working on the sequel, and his ambitions for the franchises’ future. As the actor praised the work of the crew, the actor let slip that he has ideas for a Ghostbusters sequel that could take the company out of America and to the UK, noting, particularly his fascination with Scottish folklore as an inspiration. Check out Aykroyd’s full comment below:
“I love working with the British crew, they’re superb. The studios are state of the art and vie with anything we have in Hollywood. And I have an idea for a sequel I would set here in the UK. There are lots of ghosts and mythical creatures in Scotland. I put a thousand miles on the car driving up there and it was wonderful. I went to Skye, to the Glencoe valley, Edinburgh, Glasgow… I loved it.”
Dan Aykroyd’s Ghostbuster Sequel Ideas Have Often Involved Taking The Team Out Of New York
While the possibility of the Ghostbusters organization venturing outside of the US seems ambitious, Aykroyd’s ideas actually represent a step down from his older, larger scrapped ideas for Ghostbusters sequels. Aykroyd’s scrapped original Ghostbusters 3 ideas would have seen an incarnation of the Ghostbusters team leave the current reality entirely, venturing into a hellish, twisted version of Manhattan called Manhelton, bringing them face-to-face with the devil. However, plans for the tentatively titled Ghostbusters III: Hellbound would ultimately fall through, though there was a glimpse of the story element through 2009’s Ghostbusters: The Video Game, as ideas were recycled into that project.
While Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 may be seeing the new heroes return to New York thanks to photos taken from the set hinting towards a return to the company’s fire station headquarters, it is clear that Aykroyd has ambitions for the franchise’s future beyond Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2. With Aykroyd keen on taking the organization on a globe-trotting adventure, it could be assumed that his previous ideas for the sequel are no longer something he views as needing exploration, thanks to the video game going in that direction. However, the actor’s desire to explore new mythology could still provide the franchise with uncharted territory to shake up the series.
While audiences have yet to see their first official glimpse at Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 footage, many may be surprised by Aykroyd’s incredible ambition for the franchise going forward. Following the movie’s release, Aykroyd was one of the first original stars to state he hoped to return alongside the others in the future, but the actor’s new ideas hint at ways that the series could move beyond the core cast. As such, should Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 prove successful, the franchise could open up in new, surprising ways.
