The special counsel overseeing federal investigations targeting Donald Trump is seeking January 2 next year as the trial date in the case accusing the former president of seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
In a document filed in a Washington court on Thursday, Jack Smith said that the proposed start date “would vindicate the public’s strong interest in a speedy trial — an interest guaranteed by the Constitution and federal law in all cases, but of particular significance here, where the defendant, a former president, is charged with conspiring to overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 presidential election”.
The frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, Trump has pleaded not guilty to both sets of charges. His lawyers, who have pushed back against a speedy trial in the 2020 election case, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
