Audrey Hepburn’s iconic Breakfast at Tiffany’s Givenchy gown expected to sell for £235,000 at auction in Beverly Hills – but fashion fans are all saying the same thing

A pink couture Givenchy gown worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s is expected to sell for up to £235,000 when it goes under the hammer next month.

The one-of-a-kind silk gown was specially made for the hit 1961 movie and is covered in gold tassels.

The knee-length, sleeveless frock also features a matching pink silk belt and scooped neckline.

In the movie, Holly Golightly pairs the dress with a hot pink tiara for an evening out in New York with the wealthy bachelor José da Silva Pereira.

In September, the vintage designer gown will appear in Julien Auction’s Legends: Hollywood & Royalty sale.

In the hit 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Holly Golightly (played by Audrey Hepburn) wore the dress with a pink tiara

The auction will take place in Beverly Hills, California, across three days.

The formerly hot pink gown – which has faded with age – was last sold for £150,000 by Christie’s in 2007.

Earlier this week, the pop culture Instagram account Diet Prada shared details of the sale with their 3.4m followers.

The post amassed almost 40,000 ‘likes’ in the first 24 hours – but fashion fans joked that the auction should be kept a secret for Kim Kardashian.

Last year, the reality star was slammed for wearing Marilyn Monroe’s iconic rhinestone dress to the MET Gala in New York.

The late Hollywood star was wearing the tight-fitting dress – which was designed by Jean Louis – when she sung Happy Birthday to JFK at a gala in 1962.

The 42-year-old reality star revealed she forced herself to lose 16lbs in just three weeks in order to make it fit. It was later claimed that the strap was ripped when the gown was returned to a California museum.

Following the event, it emerged that Kim couldn’t fully zip up the gown and was forced to leave it open on her backside – which she covered up with a fur shawl.

One follower commented: ‘Keep it away from Kim K.’

Another joked: ‘Everyone, don’t tell Kim Kardashian. We can’t have her ruining another artefact.’

Meanwhile, a third said: ‘Keep that dress from the Kardashians at all costs!’

However, others were saddened to see that the dress was no longer a vivid pink shade.

‘It’s kind of sad that it wasn’t preserved well up to now,’ one wrote. ‘Looks like it’s been under a light, it’s so faded.’

Similarly, another asked: ‘Why does this dress look like it was left out  in the sun since 1961?’

Audrey Hepburn – who passed away of colon cancer in 1993 – worked closely with Hubert de Givenchy throughout her film career.

The pair first met in 1953 when the Hollywood actress turned up at his Paris studio to discuss the possibility of designing the costumes for the film she was shooting, Sabrina.

Hepburn was immediately taken by the work of the designer, who had founded his fashion house just two years earlier at the age of 25, and went on to wear his designs in the film.

The following year the actress wore one of his creations when she accepted her Best Actress Oscar for Roman Holiday.

She became his muse and his creations featured in seven of her films, from the white embroidered frock she wore in 1954’s Sabrina to the scarlet strapless gown in 1957’s Funny Face.

Their relationship, both personal and professional, lasted until Hepburn’s death. Speaking to the Daily Telegraph in 2015, Givenchy described it as ‘a kind of marriage’. Hepburn once described the designer as ‘my beautiful Hubert’.
