Mollie King says daughter Annabella  could become a cricketer like her ‘hands on’ father Stuart Broad – and even wears his trademark bandana

Former The Saturdays singer Mollie King has revealed her daughter may become a cricketer like her famous father – and even wears his trademark bandana.

Mollie and fiancé Stuart Broad welcomed baby Annabella last year and mum and daughter were at The Oval to watch the England bowler end Australia’s hopes of winning the latest Ashes series.

Stuart, 37, shocked the cricket world by announcing his retirement midway through the last match – but we may not have to wait too long for another chapter in the Broad family cricketing legacy.

Stuart’s dad Chris opened the batting for England and Mollie reckons their daughter could follow in his footsteps due to the incredible bond they share.

Mollie, 36, told Five Live: ‘He’s hands on, he’s so proud of her he really is. He likes to parade her around, he’s amazing.

‘I’m sure she’ll get into the cricket when she’s older – let’s see if she has a little bandana, if Stuart’s got anything to do with it I’m sure she will.

‘He came home the other day with a little Ashes England shirt that had Broad on the back, so adorable.

‘He’s hand on and he adores her and she adores him, her little face lights up when he comes in the door.

‘At home he is so relaxed, he is so chilled and then I watch him on the TV and I’m like, “Is that the same person?”

‘He is so relaxed and gentle and sweet and I see him out there being competitive. I’m like; “Is that Stuart?”

‘But my god he loves it he absolutely loves it (cricket) I don’t think he thought he would play every single test he’s just been amazing. He adores it, he lives and breathes it and even when he’s not playing he’s watching it.

‘Without trying to sound corny we try to make as much time as possible, to just support each other and be there for each other.

‘There’s no way I would ever have missed this, it’s nice to see him do what he loves so much.’

Mollie also revealed she is behind his trademark bandana after a botched haircut – the result of being unable to get a professional trim during Britain’s national lockdown. 

Mollie said: ‘He wasn’t able to cut his hair during COVID. So he started the bandana and he had a really good summer the first time he wore it and he hasn’t taken it off since.

‘I did try and trim his hair during lockdown but obviously I’ve never used a razor like that and I had the razor the wrong way and it did the tightest possible cut just above his ear.

‘He said, ‘”stop right there”. I said, “I can’t stop there Stuart, because you’ve got one side like a zero cut and the other side – it’s all got to go”.

‘So that wasn’t a great afternoon for us so hence the bandana came in.’ 

Mollie was being interviewed by BBC TMS’s Jonathan Agnew, who had to explain that the interview was conducted before Stuart’s shock retirement announcement – and she didn’t give him a heads up.

Agnew, who asked Mollie how long Stuart planned to play on for, said: ‘She sold me down the river there. Well done Mollie. She knew and she answered that with the straightest of faces.
