The debate is taking place at the National Constitution Centre in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Apart from being the birthplace of American democracy, Pennsylvania is arguably the most critical battleground state in this election.
It has 19 out of the 270 electoral college votes Harris and Trump need to become president, and along with Michigan and Wisconsin, it forms part of the so-called “Blue Wall” – the states that Trump won against Hillary Clinton in 2016, and which Biden won back in 2020.
According to local GOP consultant Chris Nicholas, two issues are critical here: immigration and inflation.
“Regardless of who the Democratic candidate is, for Pennsylvania voters, those two issues are still top of mind,” he tells me.
“Kamala Harris has to kind of thread a needle because she wants to say she’s been an important and consequential vice president, but if you take that route, then you have to bear the brunt of your administration’s failures as well.”
