Valve has announced the implementation of official support for the DeckHD mod, a third-party display upgrade for the Steam Deck. This mod enhances the original Steam Deck’s display by increasing the resolution to 1920×1200 and expanding the color range to 87% sRGB, compared to the original 67% sRGB. The support is integrated into the Gamescope compositor, which is responsible for managing the display and rendering on the Steam Deck. This integration aims to improve compatibility and performance, reducing the need for users to manually reflash the BIOS to achieve optimal functionality.
The DeckHD mod, which is available for purchase at approximately $100, offers users a significant visual upgrade over the original Steam Deck display. The mod’s installation process, however, remains complex, requiring users to disassemble their devices. Despite these challenges, the official support from Valve is expected to streamline the setup process and enhance the overall user experience. This move by Valve indicates a broader commitment to supporting third-party modifications, potentially paving the way for more extensive customization options for Steam Deck users in the future.
