As predicted, the United Kingdom’s Labour Party on Friday toppled the long-ruling Conservatives in a historic rout, nearly doubling its seats in Parliament for a majority of well over 60%.
“We did it!” the then incoming Prime Minister Keir Starmer told a jubilant crowd, and there was no disputing that.
But in South African and absolute terms, Labour did a whole lot worse than the ANC, with a 33.7% share of the vote, way less than the 40.2% the ANC claimed, with counting in two seats (worth some 0.3% of the election) outstanding going into Friday afternoon.
