Brian Steven Smith and his then-partner, musician Stephanie Bissland.
The trial of former South African Brian Steven Smith will finally move into jury selection, late on Monday evening SA time, more than four years after a thief provided what police say is evidence of murder, which was taped by Smith himself.
Over the course of the next three to four weeks, an Alaskan court will hear allegations that Smith killed at least two women, recording at least one of those murders on a memory card, which was later labelled “Homicide at midtown Marriott”, a hotel where Smith was checked in.
On the video, a man is heard laughing and telling his victim that it is time for her to die. That man, police said, had a strong accent not common in Alaska. They recognised it as South African, and the speaker as Smith, with whom they had had previous dealings.
