The Marvels drops certain hints that leave the door open for a third installment in Carol Danvers’ MCU trilogy. Uniting Carol Danvers with Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau for the first time, The Marvels takes a new dive into the MCU’s cosmic side, revealing what happened to the Kree since Captain Marvel last met them three decades ago within the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s chronological timeline. With a new MCU superhero team established by the end of the movie, it’s likely that The Marvels will lead into upcoming stories, at least in an eventual sequel that directly continues The Marvels’ cosmic plot.
2019’s Captain Marvel introduced one of the most powerful MCU characters and revealed the true origin of Nick Fury’s Avengers Initiative. However, Carol Danvers’ MCU journey hadn’t been properly developed since then, as she only appeared as a minor character in Avengers: Endgame. Now, Captain Marvel shares the screen with two heroes with similar abilities in The Marvels, which suggests that her onscreen story is only beginning. But when exactly Marvel Studios will continue Carol Danvers’ story after the events of her second movie, especially considering The Marvels‘ post-credits scene, is still up for discussion.

Will Captain Marvel 3 Actually Happen?
By November 2023, the MCU’s upcoming movie slate doesn’t include a movie or show that explicitly includes The Marvels‘ main heroes in its cast, but they’re all likely to return sooner, possibly in a crossover event the likes of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean that The Marvels 2 or Captain Marvel 3 cannot be announced at some point, as Captain Marvel is a key MCU character who can star in her own MCU trilogy and appear as a supporting character in other films, just like heroes such as Iron Man and Thor. However, it may take some time for solid news about the sequel’s production to arrive.
Following the release of The Marvels, Brie Larson spoke to Entertainment Tonight, wherein she heavily teased that Captain Marvel would return. In the interview, Brie Larson mentioned how The Marvels broke new ground for Carol Danvers, and opened her up as a character after embracing newfound support from Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan. While she would not elaborate further, she suggested that there is “definitely something” in Danvers’ MCU future. The full quote can be read below:
I don’t want Marvel to come for me. But there is something. There is definitely something, to answer your question, that I would want to say, but I am not going to. I think there is still so much inside of Carol. I feel like getting to be on this team just cracked her open in a way that she hadn’t been, and I really loved that for her. I just loved her letting the shoulders drop a little bit, and not need to feel like all the responsibility was on her. So I think that there is just so much more to go.

When Captain Marvel 3 Could Release
Considering how crowded the MCU’s current overarching story already is, Captain Marvel 3 may not release until after the Multiverse Saga ends. While Iron Man and Spider-Man’s MCU trilogies were completed much quicker, the wait period between solo movies centered on Marvel heroes who weren’t A-list Marvel Comics icons before the MCU tends to be longer. Whereas Spider-Man: No Way Home arrived only four years after Spider-Man: Homecoming, third installments such as Captain Marvel 3 and Black Panther 3 will likely arrive until late 2027 or early 2028 at the earliest, possibly as an epilogue to the Multiverse Saga.
On the other hand, a Young Avengers team-up movie or Disney+ show starring Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel could arrive earlier given its focus on young characters the MCU has already introduced, potentially releasing within the Multiverse Saga or possibly right afterward. As for Monica Rambeau’s next appearance, it could come as early as 2024’s Deadpool 3, which could revisit the universe she ended up in during The Marvels‘ post-credits scene. Otherwise, 2026’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty could reveal what happened to Monica in that reality.
The Marvels 2 Cast: Who Could Return?
The Marvels Actor Name | The Character They Play |
---|---|
Brie Larson | Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel |
Teyonah Parris | Monica Rambeau/Photon |
Iman Vellani | Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel |
Samuel L. Jackon | Nick Fury |
Gonzo, Rizzo, Archie, and Reggie | Goose |
Park Seo-Joon | Prince Yan |
Zenobia Shroff | Muneeba Khan |
Mohan Kapur | Yusuf Khan |
Saagar Shaikh | Aamir Khan |
Hailee Steinfeld | Kate Bishop/Hawkeye |
Lashana Lynch | Maria Rambeau/Binary |
Kelsey Grammer | Hank McCoy/Beast |
Despite its cosmic scale, The Marvels doesn’t feature any major deaths, with the most notable demise being that of the film’s villain, Dar-Benn. Aside from this, all the main cast survive the events of the film, from the main three heroes to Kamala Khan’s family and Nick Fury, leaving future MCU installments to include them as they wish.
Although details about Captain Marvel 3 are scarce, a direct sequel to The Marvels could reunite the titular team, as well as bring back Nick Fury and revisit Park Seo-Joon’s Prince Yan in Aladna. However, Captain Marvel 3 will likely go in a different direction with a brand-new story, either focusing solely on Carol Danvers or featuring Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau, but introducing a new supporting cast and at least one new MCU planet.
The Marvels 2 Story: How The MCU Movie Sets Up A Sequel
With The Marvels‘ post-credits scene introducing multiversal connections, the possibilities are endless for Carol Danvers and her teammates in the near future. While Captain Marvel 3 could pick up where The Marvels left off, the MCU might first follow up the events of The Marvels with a multiversal story set in the universe where Monica Rambeau a.k.a. Photon ended up, which seems to feature not only X-Men like Beast and Charles Xavier, but also non-mutant heroes like Maria Rambeau a.k.a. Binary.
Meanwhile, a Young Avengers movie or show can reveal how Ms. Marvel and Kate Bishop recruit young heroes like Cassie Lang. Similarly, Captain Marvel later can shine as a main character in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Captain Marvel 3 Story: Will Marvel Do A New Carol Danvers Movie?
The MCU’s sequel to The Marvels could be a team-up movie in the form of The Marvels 2, but it could also be a proper solo movie exclusively centered on Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. Carol Danvers has plenty of independent stories from the source material the MCU could adapt, including her time as Binary and her encounters with Rogue from the X-Men.
If Marvel Studios waits until after Avengers: Secret Wars has concluded the Multiverse Saga to follow up on The Marvels and Danvers’ story within it, Captain Marvel 3 could feature other famous Marvel characters associated with Carol Danvers. For instance, Rogue, Blue Marvel, and the Starjammers could provide exciting narrative possibilities if Carol Danvers is the only main character in the third installment of her MCU trilogy.
