Shortly before the Tesla Cybertruck delivery event back in November 2023, details in the Cybertruck purchase agreement leaked, revealing a clause that limited the ability to resell the Cybertruck. Buyers of Tesla’s electric pickup truck would not be able to sell their Cybertrucks without Tesla’s permission — bafflingly, this clause was subsequently removed from the agreement only to reappear later on. Apparently, this is the least of the concerns for Tesla Cybertruck owners having second thoughts.
In a recent video by WHAT’S INSIDE? FAMILY on YouTube, a CarMax dealership in Utah was only willing to pay an alarming $76,000 for a Cybertruck with only 3,000 miles on the odometer. The particular Cybertruck in question is a Foundation Series trim, which retails for $119,990.
Part of the reason for the massive disparity in price likely comes from Tesla’s fickle pricing strategy, which has resulted in EVs like the Model X come down in price by as much as $25,000 in as little as two years. Another aspect that likely affected the comparatively low valuation is the Foundation Series pack — a $20,000 add-on that Tesla effectively forces early Cybertruck buyers to buy in order to jump the queue.
This was also the first Tesla Cybertruck to be appraised by CarMax, and car buying companies like CarMax are known to buy cars significantly under market value because they have to resell them and turn a profit. It’s likely that Cybertruck owners could get significantly more than the $76,000 offered by CarMax — especially given Tesla’s low production numbers for the Cybertruck.

My interest in tech started in high school, rooting and flashing my Motorola Defy, but I really fell down the rabbit hole when I realised I could overclock the i7 930 in my Gigabyte pre-built PC. This tinkering addiction eventually lead me to study product design in university. I think tech should improve the lives of the people using it, no matter the field. I like to read and write about laptops, smartphones, software and trends in technology.
