Countries
around the world on Friday called for Israel to respect – or be pressured to
respect – the order made by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that it
must prevent genocide in Gaza.
Israel’s
initial response suggested it would not do so voluntarily, and certainly not in
the fashion South Africa believed was required.
That will
now shift the focus to the Security Council of the United Nations, which acts
as an enforcement arm of sorts for the ICJ, and where the United States has a
veto.
