Fujifilm X100VI leak dispels IBIS size concerns, confirms negligible footprint increase for compact APS-C powerhouse

The compact size and relative light weight of the X100V are some of the camera’s biggest strengths, turning it into a versatile go anywhere, do anything camera. It was recently confirmed in another leak that the upcoming Fujifilm X100VI would feature IBIS, which might have set alarm bells off in the heads of those who loved the X100V for its small footprint. However, a new leak from Fuji Rumors indicates that the X100VI will only be marginally larger than the X100V that preceded it.

According to the leak, the Fujifilm X100VI will be almost imperceptibly larger than the X100V in a few ways. Fuji Rumors does not provide actual dimensions for the X100VI, although we can look at past Fujifilm releases with similar changes for clues about the expected size increase.

Fujifilm introduced IBIS in the X-T line-up with the launch of the X-T4. The move from the X-T3 to the X-T4 (curr. $1,699.95 on Amazon) saw a marginal — between 2.4 mm and 5 mm — increase in the width and thickness of the body, with the depth going from 35.4–58.8 mm on the X-T3 to 37.8–63.8 mm on the X-T4. Similarly, the X-T4 came out 2.1 mm longer than its predecessor. That said, IBIS wasn’t the only change going from the X-T3 to the X-T4 — the newer camera also used a substantially bigger battery.

Unless Fujifilm also changes the battery for the X100VI — which it may well, given the extra hardware it has to power — we can expect the body to be around 2 mm thicker and maybe slightly longer.

Another concern raised when it was confirmed that the X100VI would be getting IBIS is the weight. Given previous trends, we can expect a small weight bump from the additional hardware — in the case of the X-T4, weight without the battery and SD card increased by around 7.5% from 489 g (17.29 oz) in the X-T3 to 526 g (18.6 oz.) in the X-T4 . Much of this is likely attributed to the extra material in the larger housing, but at least some of that is in the extra hardware.

That said, it’s unlikely that most photographers would complain about a 10% increase over the Fujifilm X100V’s 478 g (16.9 oz.) when it comes with the expanded low-light and video capabilities of in-body image stabilisation.

If you’re looking for a powerful hybrid camera, check out the Fujifilm X-S20 on Amazon, or if you’re after an X100V killer, check out the Ricoh GR III Street Edition on Amazon.

My interest in tech started in high school, rooting and flashing my Motorola Defy, but I really fell down the rabbit hole when I realised I could overclock the i7 930 in my Gigabyte pre-built PC. This tinkering addiction eventually lead me to study product design in university. I think tech should improve the lives of the people using it, no matter the field. I like to read and write about laptops, smartphones, software and trends in technology.
