B.J. Green II never made it to Montlake.
After committing to Washington and former coach Kalen DeBoer on Dec. 17, Green — a senior edge rusher from Arizona State — flipped his transfer commitment to Colorado Monday.
A former walk-on from Atlanta, Green amassed 39 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, six sacks and a forced fumble in 12 games as a hybrid edge/defensive lineman at ASU last fall. He led the Sun Devils with 57 pressures and finished second in defensive snaps, according to Pro Football Focus, earning second-team All-Pac-12 honors.
The 6-foot-1, 270-pound Green has produced 60 tackles, 21 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks in 36 career games.
Meanwhile, the edge room at Washington appears to be leaking talent, after starters Bralen Trice and Zion Tupuola-Fetui departed for the NFL draft and freshman signees Noah Carter (who has since flipped to Alabama) and Keona Wilhite both de-committed.
As it stands, the Huskies have six scholarship edges: seniors Zach Durfee and Voi Tunuufi, junior Maurice Heims, sophomores Lance Holtzclaw and Jacob Lane, and redshirt freshman Anthony James. Outside of Tunuufi’s 12 tackles for loss and 10 sacks, the other five have combined for two career sacks in Seattle.
Even with Trice, Tupuola-Fetui and Co. UW ranked just 121st nationally in tackles for loss per game (4.33) and 122nd in sacks per game (1.47) last fall.
But the state of Arizona may still provide. Since Wildcats coach Jedd Fisch relocated to Washington, two Arizona edge rushers — junior Russell Davis II and sophomore Isaiah Ward — have entered the transfer portal. Both Davis (16 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks in 2023) and Ward (30 tackles, 5 TFL, 4 sacks, two forced fumbles), who are considered likely UW leans, would provide precious pass rush depth.
Though neither can quite match Green’s production.
