My heart sinks whenever I hear that one of my patients has become homeless. Now they are experiencing a medical emergency and are at risk of dying 12 years earlier than the average American. The extreme stress of constant exposure to weather, violence, and poor nutrition worsens existing health conditions and creates new ones. Sustainable funding for affordable housing would prevent countless unnecessary illnesses and deaths in our state.
Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility is a statewide organization dedicated to improving the health of Washington residents. We strongly support the Affordable Homes Act (House Bill 2276), which would create a permanent funding source for affordable housing by reducing taxes on property sales under $3 million and increasing taxes on property sales over $3 million.
Studies have shown that countries and states with progressive tax systems and robust safety nets are the healthiest places to live. Passing this bill will improve overall health and well-being and help balance Washington’s upside-down tax code.
HB 2276 is as powerful a tool as any in my doctor’s bag to improve health and, for some, it will be lifesaving. WPSR urges the passage of HB 2276.
