Summary
- Netflix’s Marvel shows left several unresolved storylines and questions that the MCU will hopefully address.
- Key questions include the fate of Kingpin, Luke Cage’s crime boss arc, and what happened to Elektra’s body.
- The return of certain characters in Daredevil: Born Again suggests that other heroes from the Netflix shows may also make a comeback in the MCU.
There are several questions from Netflix’s Marvel shows that the MCU will need to answer in the near future. Between returning characters such as Daredevil and Kingpin, flashbacks in Marvel’s Echo, changes to the MCU timeline on Disney+, and confirmations from actors and producers, it does seem as though the events of Netflix’s 6 Marvel shows are canon with the greater MCU. As such, major cliffhangers and points of confusion will hopefully be addressed.
In total, Netflix had a total of six Marvel shows running from 2013-2019. This included The Defenders which brought together the starring heroes from their primary four shows, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones. There was also the spin-off series The Punisher, continuing the journey of Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle following his first appearance in Daredevil season 2. Keeping all six shows in mind, here are 10 big questions from Netflix’s Marvel series that the MCU will hopefully answer in future projects.
How To Watch the Marvel Movies In Order (By Release Date & In Order Of MCU Timeline Events)
Want to catch up before the next release, or just revisit the universe for a refresher? Here’s the order to watch the entire MCU timeline.
10 How Long Was Kingpin In Prison (And How Did He Get Out)?
Daredevil Season 3
At the end of Daredevil season 3, Wilson Fisk’s rivalry with Daredevil comes to an epic head. Following the successful exposure of Kingpin’s crimes and systematic corruption of the FBI, Daredevil was finally able to move against Fisk who’d gradually been regaining public support while painting Daredevil as a terrorist. In a three-way battle between Daredevil, Kingpin, and the future Bullseye, Murdock ensured that Fisk would go back to prison and stay there, threatening to expose his new wife Vanessa and her own involvement in his criminal enterprise should he try to escape again.
However, both the MCU’s Hawkeye and Echo series have shown Fisk out of prison and still in charge of large portions of New York’s organized crime. That said, there’s yet to be an explanation for his newfound freedom, the current state of Kingpin’s rivalry with Daredevil, nor the fate of his wife in light of the fact that he’s somehow not behind bars. This is something that the MCU will have to answers, especially considering the tease that Kingpin will soon be running to become mayor of New York, potentially as soon as Daredevil: Born Again.
9 What Happened With Luke Cage’s Crime Boss Arc?
Luke Cage Season 2
The end of Luke Cage season 2 saw the death of Mariah Dillard, the corrupt politician who also ran the nightclub Harlem’s Paradise. In a surprise move, Dillard left the club to Luke Cage himself, her biggest rival who’d long been interfering in her operations. Accepting the club, the season’s end saw Luke believing he could keep Harlem safe by controlling its crime, an inherently slippery slope and an intriguing setup for a new season that never was. As such, it would be very exciting to get some sort of resolution in the MCU’s future.
8 What Happened To Elektra’s Body?
The Defenders
Following her original death in Daredevil season 2, the body of Elektra Natchios was taken by the ancient ninja clan known as The Hand. Using the last of their dragon bone substance used to prolong their lives, the leaders of the Hand resurrected Elektra as their Black Sky, the one meant to become their new leader. Thanks to the efforts of the newly assembled Defenders, the Hand’s efforts were foiled. Both Daredevil and Elektra were buried underground, though while Matt Murdock was found alive and eventually recovered, Elektra’s body was mysteriously never found. Perhaps there’s room for an MCU return.
7 What Happened To K’un-Lun?
Iron Fist Season 1
At the end of Iron Fist season 1, Danny Rand intended to return to the mystical city of K’un-Lun after abandoning his post as the Iron Fist and returning home to New York. However, K’un-Lun was gone once Danny returned. The entire city disappeared with only a few dead Hand soldiers near the gate.
That being said, neither The Defenders nor Iron Fist season 2 gave any reasoning for the city’s disappearance, an event that was out of the ordinary beyond its expected disappearances from the physical plane every 15 years. As such, many have theorized that Shang-Chi 2 could be the perfect place to continue Danny Rand’s story and to finally explain K’un-Lun’s fate due to potential connections with the mystical realm of Ta-Lo.
6 How Did Danny Rand Get New Iron Fist Powers?
Iron Fist Season 2
With the power of The Iron Fist having transferred to Colleen Wing at the end of Iron Fist season 2, the final scene saw Danny Rand wielding a pair of chi-enchanced pistols, not unlike those used by Orson Randall, a former Iron Fist in the comics who’s also referenced at the end of the Netflix show. To that end, one would hope that the MCU will provide an explanation for how Danny got his hands on these new weapons, as well as his teased future with Randall.
5 Did The Hand Survive Netflix’s Defenders?
The Defenders
Although the leaders of the Hand such as Signourney Weaver’s Alexandra Reid fell before Elektra with others being buried beneath Midland Circle, the fate of the Hand remains unknown. While diminished, one could easily see them potentially regrouping in the near future, perhaps under Elektra herself assuming she still lives following the end of The Defenders crossover series. At any rate, the final fate of the Hand as an organization was largely left unanswered beyond the demise of its long-lived leadership.
4 Is The Punisher Still Working For The CIA?
Punisher Season 2
At the end of The Punisher season 2, Frank Castle was back to serving his typically brutal brand of justice, convincing two different gangs to come to a warehouse sitdown so he could gun them both down at once. However, he also received a call from Homeland Security’s Dinah Madani who’d since joined the CIA following the demise of Billy Russo.
Although Madani offered him a job as a contracted assassin, Castle seemed fairly disinterested. However, that kind of role could offer Castle a pretty exciting role in the MCU’s future if he were to change his mind, especially considering the teased CIA connections with Marvel’s Thunderbolts via Director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. However, The Punisher’s curent status quo has yet to be revealed, though his confirmed role in Daredevil: Born Again will hopefully shed som light on the subject.
3 Will Luke Cage And Jessica Jones Get Together?
Jessica Jones Season 3
While their intertwined past certainly has its ups and downs, Netflix’s Jessica Jones season 3 left the door open as to whether Jessica and Luke Cage would ever end up together as they have in the original comics. Making one last appearance in a cameo, Luke Cage comes to Alias Investigations to encourage Jessica to do the right thing and bring in her corrupted sister Trish Walker.
Wearing the same suit he wore at the end of his own show, the implication is that Luke was still running Harlem’s organized crime. While it was confirmed that they had each other’s trust and Luke hoped someone who cared about him would step in if he ever went too far, there was no mention of whether Luke and Jessica might become anything more down the line. However, a future romance arc for Luke and Jessica is something MCU fans have long been hoping for.
2 Does Alias Investigations Still Exist?
Jessica Jones Season 3
After confirming that Walker was in custody and headed to the Raft, Jessica was all set to leave New York and head for Mexcio in the last shot of Jessica Jones season 3, having given the keys to Alias to her partner Malcolm. However, the voice of Kilgrave whispers in her head, urging her to give up. This seemingly motivates Jessica to stay in New York. To that end, one would assume that Jones would continue working with Malcolm at Alias Investigations going forward in the MCU, though her future has yet to be confirmed.
1 Is There A Future For The Defenders In The MCU?
All The Netflix Shows Are Reportedly Canon
At the moment, it’s hard to say if the original Defenders will ever get back together for a teamup in the MCU. After all, the only confirmed and currently active member of the team in the MCU is Daredevil. That being said, the returns of other Netflix characters such as Kingpin, Punisher, Bullseye, Foggy Nelson, and Karen Page in Daredevil: Born Again are all good signs that other heroes might eventually come back as well. It would certainly be nice to get resolutions for so many arcs and questions that were left unanswered by the cancelations.
Daredevil: Born Again is currently in production and it set to begin streaming in 2025.
