The Witcher director Marc Jobst hints Henry Cavill may have left the Netflix series because his unrelenting work ethic took a big toll: ‘These are demanding shows to make’

Less than a month after Henry Cavill’s final episodes of Netflix’s The Witcher have aired, director Mark Jobst is opening up about his exit.

Cavill, 40, played Geralt of Rivia in the first three seasons of the popular Netflix series, based on the beloved book series by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski.

However, he announced in October 2022 that he would be leaving the series after the third season, with Liam Hemsworth coming aboard to replace him.

While many speculated that his exit was due to his brief return as Superman in last year’s Black Adam… before those plans were scrapped by new DC heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, Jobst has another theory.

The director – who was at the helm for two episodes in the show’s first season, believes that sheer exhaustion and his unrelenting work ethic may have had a hand in his exit as well.

‘Well, look, Henry has done three series, these are demanding shows to make, you know, they are huge. Henry does every single beat of his stunts, he won’t even allow a hand, if you’re doing a close up of a hand grabbing a sword, it has to be his hand,’ Jobst explained.

‘So, normally, what you do is you bring in a double, Henry will go off and shoot some other scene in which he’s in somewhere else, and you get somebody else into the hand, so that you don’t have to bother your number one. Henry won’t do that, and as a result of that, the results are extraordinary,’ Jobst admitted.

‘You’re working with an incredible athlete, first and foremost, who works out hours before, and hours after, you’ve been shooting for 12 hours, and who cares deeply about the work that he does,’ he added.

Jobst explained that the two episodes he worked on in the first season were filmed in four different countries, adding Cavill spent weeks rehearsing sword fighting scenes.

‘That’s draining on your number one, so after three series, I feel, “Okay, he’s brought the show into being, and if he feels like he’s done what he can, I trust him,” Jobst said.

‘That focus that he has, that desire to get it right, is a gift to work with, because it elevates everybody to say, “Good enough isn’t good enough. It’s got to be fantastic.” We all want to work like that, we all don’t wanna make something that’s good, we want to make something incredible,’ he confirmed.

It seems fans aren’t too pleased with Henry Cavill leaving his beloved role as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher, with the final episodes of the show’s third season now the worst-rated in series history.

A late July report from What’s On Netflix reveals that the final three episodes, released last Thursday, were the worst-rated by the fans on IMDb.

The plummeting ratings also brought the overall average for Season 3 down enough to make it, by far, the worst-rated season.

The series was already trending downwards as far as the IMDb ratings are concerned, though the final three episodes of Season 3 are by far the show’s worst.

The sixth episode actually rebounded a bit with a 7.0 rating, the highest of the season, following a 6.0, 5.4 and 5.7 ratings for the previous three episodes.

The show slipped drastically to a new low, though, with the penultimate seventh episode earning a series-low 4.3 rating.

The eighth and final episode of Season 3 rebounded slightly with a 5.3 rating, bringing its season average (an average of the individual episode ratings) to a 5.8.

That’s far below the 8.3 average rating in Season 1 and the 8.0 average rating in Season 2.
