Tesla has launched “the only home charging option that can charge any electric vehicle,” at least in North America. The new universal wall charger is priced at US$595, and has a combined CCS/NACS Magic Dock connector of the type that Tesla started equipping some of its Supercharger stations with.
This way those who top up at home will be able to charge their electric car without pesky adapters regardless of whether they drive a Tesla or another EV brand. The so-called Universal Wall Connector by Tesla aims to democratize home charging the way the automaker did when it open-sourced its North American Charging Standard (NACS) solution.
The move led to mass adoption of the NACS port and connector by major EV makers like GM, Ford, Rivian, Volvo, Mercedes, and others, as well as by the biggest charging networks in the US. The way that the universal home charger works is by providing a locked CCS plug at the end of a NACS connector that is released when pressing the button on the handle to charge a CCS-equipped EV. For Tesla owners, the Magic Dock simply releases the NACS connector.
Tesla’s new Universal Wall Connector costs US$595 and is scheduled for an October release with the same specs as Tesla’s existing separate NACS or J1772 home chargers such as a 48A power output and 24-foot cable length.
