The spirit is achieved with an interesting process that involved first aging in American White Oak barrels that were then sent to Mexico where they were used for maturing añejo tequila. The barrels were then sent back to Lynchburg to be used for finishing the whiskey, which thus imparts characteristics of premium tequila into every sip. The spirit is thus reported to have sweet citrus notes with light oak on the nose, the flavor of brown sugar and dried spices.
Master Distiller Chris Fletcher commented on the new Jack Daniel’s añejo tequila barrel-finished whiskey saying, “As one of the most complete distilleries in the world, we’re fortunate to have the ability to experiment with every part of the whiskey making process, and that’s what our Distillery Series is all about. This añejo tequila barrel-finished whiskey pushes the bounds on what people may expect out of a Tennessee Whiskey, yet still has the familiar characteristics that are uniquely Jack Daniel’s.”
