Sofia Richie had been on social media for years, but the 24-year-old never seemed to realize the extent of her influence until she got a black eye.
‘Wakeboard: 1, Sof: 0,’ the budding fashion designer wrote next to a photo of herself posing in sleeveless salmon pink Chanel dress which has received nearly one million likes.
In an interview with Town and Country, the model told the outlet how surprised she was at comments such as ‘Sofia got a black eye so now I will punch myself in the eye,’ and ‘It girls gonna be giving themselves black eyes after seeing this.’
‘Can you believe that?’ she asked in disbelief.
‘People were like, “Sofia got a black eye, so I want a black eye.” I was like, “No, no, no! That’s a bad idea.”

A few days later, the savvy fashionista turned the mishap into an opportunity for a makeup tutorial and some brand promotion on TikTok.
‘I think you’ve all heard of my incident,’ she told the 3.1 million followers who watch her every move.
‘The goal here today is to cover, conceal, brighten and look natural,’ she explained using a YSL Touche Eclat concealer pen.
The video received nearly 300,000 likes and was bookmarked nearly seven thousand times.
Sofia launched her TikTok account just two days before her lavish April wedding to British music executive Elliot Grainge, 29.
‘We went into the wedding with zero motive,’ she claimed, adding that the TikTok account was started that weekend on a whim.
Before becoming an influencer, Sofia had a lot of opportunity, but struggled to find her place in the world.
‘I think everyone wants to be like their parents when they’re growing up, and I admired my dad so much, and that drove me down a music path for a moment. But it didn’t feel right for me,’ she explained.

I didn’t have the experience, and I didn’t want to be one of those kid celebrities that got the role because my dad is who he is. So I was like, “You know what? I know I’m not cut out for this. Let me just be myself.”‘
Being herself has paid off.

‘The evolution that I personally wanted to have with my style— that has been a focus for me for the past two years,’ she said.

‘I thought about what makes me feel the most confident in myself as a woman. And when I dressed a bit more sophisticated was when I felt the most empowered. So I embraced that.’
At a time when many social media accounts are bursting with bikini shots, Sofia, who is not averse to baring her toned abs and sharing her workout routines found her less is more approach resonated with her fans.
‘It was a bit shocking, the fact that a new generation would be interested in dressing that way,’ she admitted.
She applies the same less in more philosophy when it comes to her personal life. Sofia has shared photos from her wedding and honeymoon, but keeps her homelife with her new husband away from the spotlight.
‘We don’t live out our whole lives on Instagram. We know when to turn it off,’ she said.
