Molly Sellers has owned this house with her husband, two kids, and two dogs for two years: I found our home right after finishing a complete kitchen reno that my husband and I did ourselves. But I stumbled upon it at an estate sale. I loved the layout and style. A few weeks later it was on the market and I drove past it on the way home from another estate sale and told my husband we were moving. It needed some updating, but was full of character that I didn’t want to see anyone else take away from it.
We had a 2-year-old at the time who desperately needed a yard to play in, so this house that also had a beautiful garden was a perfect fit. Two years later, with a 4- and 1-year-old, it is still such a joy. Because it’s an older home, we have lots of less-than-exciting fixes these days. We have a lot of future plans for expanding and adding living spaces to our home. The original builder was a craftsman and dubbed the house “Swiss Chalet.” We are so honored to be part of this house’s story.
I am an interior designer — or at least I was, until I became a mom. But I’ve always been a bargain hunter. So my style is fairly eclectic, but I work to make my home feel luxurious on a budget, while also paying a great deal of attention to architecture, balance, and details.
Describe your home’s style in five words or fewer: Colorful, charming, engaging, and unique.
What is your favorite room and why? My favorite room is the living room. It has cedar beams and paneling on the walls, a stone fireplace, and diamond paned windows. I’ve worked really hard to balance out some of the original character with modern refreshing elements. It’s the heart of the home and it is also a step-down room so it feels extra cozy.
What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? My home is ever-evolving. I recently installed a fun geometric wall covering from Tempaper that mimics the shapes and lines used in our “Swiss Chalet” home. I’m always thrifting so artwork is really my favorite way to make our home feel unique. My current passion is reupholstery. So I’m working to update a few rooms in our house with eclectic soft seating.
Any advice for creating a home you love? My advice as a designer, mom, and bargain hunter is to embrace color and pattern. Pay less attention to what is trendy and lean into what makes you happy. I’d say it’s so much easier to curate a beautiful space with vintage pieces, comfy furniture, and one-of-a-kind decor than to copy a Pinterest image.
