Samsung touts its Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 as its most robust Android foldable smartphones yet, even though the OEM concedes it did not manage to develop dust resistance for either device in this generation. The popular third-party repair channel iFixit verified this for the Z Fold5 by exposing it to a full zip-lock bag of UV-responsive powder during its teardown.
That test revealed that a lot of that day-glo dust was capable of getting all the way into the Fold5’s new hinge mechanism, although it didn’t seem to impair the new flagship’s ability to function all the way through the disassembly video.
On the plus side, iFixit reports that the Z Fold5 has upgraded to Samsung’s new pull-pouch system to secure its batteries, a removal-friendly measure that is probably the OEM’s main concession to the EU’s upcoming independent repair-enabling directive. The Z Flip5 also has the new kind of pull-tab, as demonstrated by PBKReviews.
The change is particularly welcome as both the Fold5 and Flip5 have 2 batteries apiece (adding up to 4,400mAh and 3,600mAh respectively) that could need replacing one day. Neither smartphone seemed more or less amenable to dissection than previous generations, however, leading iFixit to slam the more premium Fold5 in particular, as the chances of removing its new Dynamic AMOLED main display in one piece are hampered by the ever-present screen protector and “breakable” plastic border.

I became a professional writer and editor shortly after graduation. My degrees are in biomedical sciences; however, they led to some experience in the biotech area, which convinced me of its potential to revolutionize our health, environment and lives in general. This developed into an all-consuming interest in more aspects of tech over time: I can never write enough on the latest electronics, gadgets and innovations. My other interests include imaging, astronomy, and streaming all the things. Oh, and coffee.
