One showrunner for The Bear wanted to see Carmy and Sydney get together, but her idea was quickly vetoed. The Bear is a show that explores the harsh reality of running a restaurant in Chicago. The show earned rave reviews through its second season and has maintained a balance between humor, stress, and romance. The romances of Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), in particular, have been the subject of debate. The ambiguity of his partnership with Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) is at the heart of it all, and the potential relationship has been a fan-favorite idea since the show began.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, The Bear co-showrunner Joanna Calo explained that she even originally planned to see Carmy and Sydney begin a romantic partnership. Her fellow showrunner and the show’s creator, Christopher Storer, shot down the idea as soon as he heard it. While Calo was interested at first, she has come around to the idea that Storer was right about the direction of The Bear season 2. Check out her quote below:
It really surprised me. And I will say, at one point, very early on, I was like, ‘Maybe they do hook up.’ And Chris was like, ‘No!’ And he was totally right, but I think what I was getting at was that these relationships are complicated. I’ve heard people use the term ‘work wife’ — there are relationships in our lives that have all different meanings, and we sometimes really rush to characterize everything very cleanly and there’s something beautiful about acknowledging how messy our lives really are and just how enmeshed so many of our relationships are.
Carmy & Sydney’s Potential Partnership
The Bear‘s producers and stars have been fairly open that the Carmy and Sydney relationship will not be anything that audiences are looking for. The draw of The Bear is that Carmy’s life is exceptionally chaotic and leaves little room for anything outside of his restaurant. As much as a fitting and equally beneficial relationship would likely ease some of Carmy’s nerves, the producers are concerned that decreased stress would leave Carmy will little to do. Edebiri even considers the idea akin to asking Breaking Bad‘s Walter White to seek therapy.
Carmy has had a partner before, though Carmy’s relationship with Claire fell apart after he was stuck in the refrigerator at the end of The Bear season 2. Claire served to distract Carmy from the stresses of his restaurant, but her very presence meant that he could not completely focus on his business. Their relationship was destined to fail because he needed to choose his restaurant or his partner. Sydney has provided a fitting alternative because she works at The Beef and understands many of Carmy’s struggles.
At its core, however, The Bear is still a drama series. If Carmy does ever find the perfect partner who can help him balance his responsibilities, it will have to come at the end of the series. After all, there would be nothing left to explore. The Bear is still earning incredible reviews from critics and high praise from audiences, so there is not yet any need to seriously diverge from the central premise of the show. Storer refused to allow Carmy and Sydney to get together in The Bear, as the very idea would break the series.
