If you are looking for an RTX 4070 laptop that is close to the US$1,000 sweet spot, Newegg has an excellent deal with an MSI Katana model also featuring an Intel i7-12650H processor. MSRP for this laptop is US$1,499.99, but Newegg is applying a hefty US$340 discount and offers a free MSI backpack.
MSI introduced the Katana lineup as a budget solution for gamers, so definitely expect some compromises on components like the cooling system, display and keyboard quality. Previous models appeared to be quite loud and hot, while some keys appeared to break more often than not, but if you use headphones and hookup a quality keyboard, these problems might not affect you too much. The FHD display also seems a bit dim at 250 nits and color gamut is limited to 66% sRGB. At least it comes with 144 Hz refresh rate.
Thankfully, there is no major compromise when it comes to the hardware components. The i7-12650H is decent for gaming with its four efficiency cores and six performance cores boosting up to 4.7 GHz. It is coupled with 16 GB of DDR5-4000 RAM and 1 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD storage. Even though the RTX 4070 dGPU with 8 GB VRAM is limited to 105 W TGP, that should not actually affect overall performance, as tests have shown that anything over 110 W TGP for this model is redundant.
Port selection includes 1x USB-C 3.2 Gen 1, 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, 1x USB 2.0, an HDMI 2.1 HDMI video output, headphone jack and 1 GbE jack. Wireless connectivity is offered through a Wi-Fi 6 +BT 5.2 card and there is also a 720p webcam plus a 53.5 Wh battery. The laptop has a 0.98-inch profile and weighs 4.96 lbs.
