Lioness Ella Toone squeals ‘my elbows are freezing!’ following a stint in a cryotherapy chamber as England advance to the last 16 of the Women’s World Cup
England women’s midfielder Ella Toone waves her hands as she leaves a cryotherapy chamber and declares: ‘My elbows are freezing!’ in a clip posted online.
The Lionesses laugh as Ella, 23, waves from inside the freezing cold chamber while the team prepares for their next World Cup 2023 match against Nigeria, after thrashing China 6-1 to advance to the final 16 in the tournament.
As they leave fans in awe with their slick performances on the world stage, the team may now have revealed their secret to remaining in peak condition as they shared the insight into their recovery process on their Facebook page.
Georgia Stanway, Lucy Bronze, Alessia Russo, Beth England and Keira Walsh joined their teammate Ella as they immersed themselves in a chamber which drops typically to around -110°C to -140°C.
Wearing fluffy earmuffs, wooly socks and gloves, Ella Toone emerged from the ice cold pod and declared she was very, very cold.
The England women’s football teams secret weapon to success at the World Cup is undergoing cryotherapy sessions
Cryotherapy involves exposing the body to extremely cold temperatures for a short period of time to aid in their recovery and enhance their performance.
The England squad use cryotherapy as part of their training and recovery routine to help reduce inflammation, muscle soreness, and fatigue.
Speaking to The Mirror, Kiara Rybie at CryoPlus- which is were the team go to recover down under- said: ‘The first time they came in, they were a bit drained. They just had a massive three hour session and had been signing autographs and stuff.
‘Over the days of them coming in you could see them progressively get a lot more talkative and more on it and on the ball a bit more, which was really nice to see.
‘We did have some girls say that is just unreal. That was like a completely different experience they’ve never had. I think it gave them a boost.’
The benefits of the ice cold temperatures in football have been heralded by legends including Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Harland who use it to speed up their recovery.
The City forward even went as far as to install a £50,000 cryochamber in his Chester mansion.

The footballers gave an insight into their recovery after they shared a clip of the team undergoing a cryotherapy session on Facebook on Monday

After the Lionesses 6-1 victory over China at the Women’s World Cup in Australia (pictured) with their slick performance many are wondering how they stay in peak condition
Like Haaland, the No 7 also had a private cryotherapy chamber installed at his Manchester mansion – whereas Chelsea’s Thiago Silva used a more localised form of cryotherapy whilst recovering from a knee injury in February of this year.
The extreme cold temperatures cause blood vessels to constrict, which helps to reduce swelling and inflammation in the muscles and joints.
This can be particularly beneficial after intense training sessions or matches, as it helps to speed up the recovery process.
Cryotherapy also stimulates the release of endorphins, which are natural painkillers and mood enhancers.
This can help the players feel more energized and mentally focused, which is important for their performance on the field.
In addition to its recovery benefits, cryotherapy is also believed to have performance-enhancing effects.
The extreme cold temperatures can increase blood circulation and oxygenation, which can improve muscle function and endurance.
It can also help to boost the immune system, which is important for preventing illness and maintaining overall health.
Cryotherapy is just one of the many tools and techniques the footballers use to stay at the top of their game.
