Mike Pence, who served as Donald Trump’s loyal Vice-President until the insurrection went on Fox News to slam his former boss and his “gaggle of crackpot lawyers”.
Trump asked Pence to overturn the election result, something Pence rejected, marking him as a target for the rioters who stormed the Capitol chanting “Hang Pence.”
Pence, who is also running for the Republican nomination is unrepentant and one of the few Republicans willing to criticise Trump head-on.
He went on to Fox News, the 24-hour news channel owned by Australian Rupert Murdoch, and favoured by MAGA Republicans aka Trump supporters, to slam Trump’s conduct on that day.
“The President specifically asked me and his gaggle of crackpot lawyers asked me to literally reject votes,” Pence said.
“Literally chaos would have ensued.
“The American people deserve to know that President Trump and his advisers didn’t just ask me to pause, they asked me to reject votes, return votes, essentially to overturn the election.
“I rejected that out of hand and I did my duty that day.”
Pence’s strident, and almost lone rebuttal of Trump amongst Republicans has sparked speculation that he could be a star witness for special counsel Jack Smith.
