“At least some” of Apple’s next-generation iPhone 15 series should sport up to 35W charging, according to 9to5Mac’s “industry sources”. If there is to be any distinction in charging speeds between the iPhone 15 models, it is likely that the iPhone 15 Pro models will benefit from the new faster charging speeds. Currently, the iPhone 14 is limited to 20W charging speeds while the iPhone 14 Pro can charge at up to 27W.
From empty to a full charge, an iPhone 14 Pro takes roughly 2 hours. By comparison, a Galaxy S23 Ultra with Samsung’s 45W charging takes just under 1 hour. This suggests that the gains in charging speeds for the iPhone 15 Pro models are likely to be modest, but nonetheless welcome. Of course, these charging speeds are a long way away from the charging speeds seen on Chinese flagship phones from makers like Xiaomi and Vivo which can exceed 100W. The current market leader is the Realme GT 3 which is capable of charging speeds up to an insane 240W.
The iPhone 15 series is expected to launch next month, in line with Apple’s typical iPhone launch window. The iPhone 15 Pro models are the most eagerly anticipated as they are expected to bring the most substantial upgrades. These include a new titanium chassis, replacing the current weighty stainless steel construction in the iPhone 14 Pro series and recent predecessors. A new more powerful and efficient A17 chip is expected along with an upgraded display with narrower bezels all around. A switch expected on all the new iPhone 15 models is the switch from a Lightning port to USB-C, although the iPhone 15 Pro models could support Thunderbolt connectivity for up to 40 Gbps data transfer speeds.
