Baldur’s Gate 3 has no shortage of murders, and once you reach Act 3, you will come across yet another mystery in Rivington, the Open Hand Temple Murders. The first piece of this investigation will involve looking into the murder of Father Lorgan, the leader of the Open Hand Temple.
When initially chatting with those around the temple, there will be a variety of theories about what happened and no way to get a clear answer. Therefore, you will need to engage in a good old-fashioned murder investigation to uncover what happened to Father Lorgan. To kick off the investigation, speak with Sister Yannis and offer assistance.
How To Start The Investigation
The main investigator on the case, Valeria, will already be convinced of someone’s guilt, refugee Brilgor. Now it just comes down to proving whether Valeria is correct or uncovering who really committed these murders. Sister Yannis will provide some hot spot areas of interest that should be looked into further. There is no specific order instructed when the locations are given, but following the most obvious direct method is the quickest way to solve this Baldur’s Gate 3 murder. The best place to begin is with the body itself.
Several questions can be asked, but the most important one is that Father Lorgan can explain who murdered him, just not as precisely as possible. He will confirm that, to Valeria’s disappointment, it was not Brilgor that killed him. Instead, he will share details about his killer that simply state it was a dwarf dressed in red. Though it’s not exactly a name, it’s a pretty good detail to start with.
Now it’s on to the next corpse, which is actually that of the original suspect, Brilgor. Unfortunately, he’s already been buried, so before speaking with him, his casket must be dug up. Head out to the small graveyard behind the temple in Baldur’s Gate 3 to find a dirt mound that is Brilgor’s grave. Dig up the casket and initiate the same Speak With The Dead spell to ask Brilgor some questions. He will provide a little more to work with, so now it’s time to head on down to the scene of the crime, the basements.
Investigate The Crime Scene
Head through the Kitchen and into the Ornate Wooden Hatch that Sister Yannis mentioned earlier. Speaking with the cook is available, but they don’t have any significant information to offer, so if you are just looking to solve the murder as fast as possible, don’t bother. While traversing the tunnels, one of the rooms you will come across first is the crypt.
Though it has no relevance to the Open Hand Temple murders, it does help complete a quest that was started in Act 2, Help The Cursed Monk. Continue to find another room containing an altar. There is a larger room behind the altar to explore but to pass through, the buttons behind the crests on the wall must be pressed.
Entering this room will initiate some combat that isn’t optional, so be prepared for that by utilizing things like resting in Baldur’s Gate 3. While not a particularly difficult battle, it can still be troubling if you are caught off guard. After the fight is over, loot all the bodies, including those that are already in the room. One body will have an item related to another quest in Act 3, but the item you are looking for is the Flower Key.
Don’t forget to search the hole next to the wooden platform leading down to the water, as it will contain the murder weapon, Stillmaker. Feel free to speak to the dead here too, but it’s optional, and they will only have a little to add, however, make sure to grab the Flower Key before heading out.
If you have high enough Perception, you will be able to discover the hole containing the murder weapon on your own without any searching or guidance.
Use The Flower Key
With the Flower Key in hand, you can proceed with the rest of the quest. Unfortunately, the key needs to be used elsewhere at Fraygo’s Flophouse. To reach the Flophouse, you will need to pass through the South Span Checkpoint, which can be quite a task depending on choices made up to this point. Since the outcome of this can vary as you can talk your way through it or fight some of Baldur’s Gate 3‘s enemies to possible imprisonment, you should choose the easiest option to reach Fraygo’s Flophouse.
After reaching Wyrm’s Crossing, head straight into Fraygo’s Flophouse. Head up to the third floor and look for the large wardrobe. Interact with it, and it will reveal a secret room. To nobody’s surprise, the secret room is concealing yet another murder scene. You can use the Speak With The Dead spell in Baldur’s Gate 3 can be used here too, but it’s unnecessary. However, be sure to grab the journal on the desk as it will reveal the murder is all part of a Bhaalist Plot. You will also come across a hit list noting other intended targets.
How To Solve The Murder
With all the evidence acquired, report back to the Hollyphant Investigator, Valeria. She can be found on the second floor of Sharess’ Caress, which is directly across the street from Fraygo’s Flophouse. Inform her of the truth, proving Brilgor’s innocence and the truth behind the murders of the Open Hand Temple.
Speaking with her will complete the quest and open the door for more murder investigations in Baldur’s Gate 3. Note that if Valeria is not in Sharess’ Caress, she is locked in some other story quest and thus will not appear at this location. However, she will be encountered in the future, and the quest can be marked completed.
