Early on in Baldur’s Gate 3‘s main story, you will come across Selune’s Defiled Temple, which contains a puzzle related to different moon phase patterns. The puzzle itself is quite challenging, but you will have to solve it if you plan on going to the Underdark.
You will be to identify this puzzle by finding four rotating discs that have corresponding different moon phases. These phases include full moon, half, and new moon symbols. If it hasn’t become apparent already, this puzzle in Baldur’s Gate 3 is solved by arranging the different moon phases in a specific order. There’s also a way to bypass this puzzle completely instead of going through the trouble of solving it.
Moon Door Puzzle Solution in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3)
When attempting the Moondoor puzzle in Baldur’s Gate 3, the goal is to get the rotating discs to align, as seen in the image above. The main goal is to arrange the discs where the Full Moons (full white dots) appear at the top, half-moons in the middle, and new or no moons (dark dots) at the bottom.
If you require an additional hint to solve the moon door puzzle, you can find a clue in the Shattered Sanctum. There you will find a mural that shows the precise location of each moon that you need to achieve by rotating the discs.
Once you are ready to solve this puzzle, it is advisable to change your camera angle so that you can see the patterns clearly. A top-down or eagle’s eye view is recommended as it makes seeing the different moon symbols quite easy. Here’s how you can achieve the above moon pattern by rotating the four discs:
- Rotate the right disc once.
- Rotate the left disc three times.
- Rotate the bottom disc twice.
- Rotate the right disc twice.
- Rotate the left disc twice.
- Rotate the top disc twice.
- Rotate the left disc three times.
- Rotate the right disc once.

However, if you have enough Perception in Baldur’s Gate 3, you can avoid the whole process altogether. Examine the Selune symbols on the wall; you should notice a lever hidden among one of them. Trying to use the lever will lock it, but if you use Thieves’ Tools after it locks, it will free the lever and use it to unlock the door.
Once you have opened the door, you can proceed to Baldur’s Gate 3‘s Underdark. You will be able to move down the stairs which leads to the Selunite Outpost.
