Several quest lines lead to the Gauntlet of Shar dungeon in Baldur’s Gate 3, but this temple to darkness has more than one puzzle designed to block your party’s way forward. This location can be found near the Grand Mausoleum, in a section of the map toward the Reithwin Graveyard. To find treasures hidden here, you’ll have to complete trials that test your party’s skills and tenacity in and out of battle.
To even enter the Gauntlet of Shar, you have to press a series of buttons in the right order to open the way forward into the dungeon. A small book in the area gives you clues about each painting hung in the room with the buttons, giving you a good idea of what the right sequence should be. Stepping on the button next to the Moonrise Towers first, then the Grief and General will unlock the path deeper into the Gauntlet in Baldur’s Gate 3.
The Lantern Puzzle Solution
The first section of the dungeon is a central statue surrounded by a magical barrier that repels your character if you approach it. An Umbral Gem is held in the statue’s arms and serves as an important item to progress the “Find the Nightsong” quest, which is integral to the story of Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3. Several lanterns hanging from the ceiling need to be lowered to solve the puzzle.
Simply going around this space and activating the levers in each corner of the room brings the lanterns down to where your character in Baldur’s Gate 3 can interact with them. From here, extinguish the flames in every lantern to plunge the room into darkness. This reveals the two magical circles around the statue, which have gaps that your character can move past to reach the Orb at the very center.

There are three more Umbral Gems hidden behind puzzles that act as Trials in the Gauntlet of Shar, which you will need to reach the Inner Sanctum of the dungeon. The Soft-Step Trial sports a maze that your party must move through without being spotted by shadows. Similarly, the Faith-Step Trial has you memorize the positions of platforms you must jump across to reach the Gem.
Both the Soft-Step Trial and the Faith-Step Trial are made easier with spells that transport your character to the other side of the area, such as Dimension Door.
The final Self-Same Trial could hardly be considered a puzzle, as it is a battle against shadow versions of you and your party members. Depending on your level or traits of a custom character in Baldur’s Gate 3, this section might be extremely difficult or relatively easy. Other tests throughout the Gauntlet of Shar are just as straightforward, but beware of traps that still could trigger after you solve the puzzles here in Baldur’s Gate 3.
