One of the few Lolth-Sworn aware of the Adamantine Forge in Baldur’s Gate 3, Filro the Forgotten, is a hidden boss that your party can try to beat deep in the southwest parts of the Underdark. However, this enemy is protected by two Hook Horrors, large monsters that can ambush your characters. With another creature lurking in the ground, your group has to approach this fight carefully.
Filro and the two Hook Horrors may be found close to the Sussur Tree Ancient Sigil Circle or fast travel point in Baldur’s Gate 3. Around the spot where the Drow is, a dangerous burrowing monster called a Bulette roams nearby. Among the companions you can recruit into your party to fight these mini-bosses, Astarion and Gale are excellent choices for their high damage and ability to hit targets far away respectfully.
How to Beat Filro the Forgotten
The easiest way to defeat Filro the Forgotten in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to have one character sneak attack him after getting past the Hook Horrors. Party members with a high Stealth stat should be able to move toward the Drow undetected until they are within range to attack. Sneak Attack is a powerful feature of the Rogue class, adding a ton of damage to your character’s strikes if you are near an ally or hidden from enemies.
The Rogue subclass Assassin can deal some of the highest damage in the game by combining Sneak Attack with their Assassinate Feature, which turns any attack against a Surprised creature into a Critical Hit.
Someone like Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3 can easily reach Filro without being spotted by the two Hook Horrors, delivering a massive attack that could kill in one hit. Make sure to use only one character split off from the party to approach Filro. If you have the entire party trying to get near the mini-boss, there’s a higher chance that he will notice, starting a tough combat that will be much harder to win with the other monsters included.
If Filro survives any surprise attack, he remains a level 4 Wizard character in Baldur’s Gate 3 with Darkvision and Fey Ancestry as a Drow. Wielding Fire Bolt, Mirror Image, Tasha’s Hideous Laughter, and Thunderwave, this spell caster has many ways to adapt to your party. This enemy has no resistance to any damage type with 25 Hit Points, but their 20 Armor Class can make them challenging to hit.
Filro the Forgotten’s Fey Ancestry causes them to have an advantage on any Saving Throw against being Charmed and prevents them from ever being put to sleep by magic.
How To Beat The Hook Horrors
Whether you kill Filro right away or not, the Hook Horrors will attack your party unless you lure them into a place where the Bulette will strike. When your character loses their balance or feels a tremor in the ground, the Bulette in Baldur’s Gate 3 has to be close by. Detecting these signs early gives you time to lead the Hook Horrors on the ground, where the burrowing shark monster is moving around.
The Territorial Trait of the Bulette will always cause it to try and kill other monstrosities before anyone in your party, causing it to attack the Hook Horrors on the ground near Filro.
At the beginning of combat, there is one Hook Horror on the ground and another up in the branches of the Sussur Tree. Both creatures will attempt to attack your party at close-range, so be prepared to use bows or ranged spells in Baldur’s Gate 3 to damage the one above you before it gets close. The Hook Horrors have 97 Hit Points, making them bulky creatures that may take a long time to beat without the Bulette’s help.
How To Beat The Bulette
Once the Hook Horrors and Filro have been dealt with, the Bulette will be the last mini-boss in Baldur’s Gate 3 that is best fought from a distance. Hopefully, its assault on the Horrors will leave the Bulette injured, but its 125 Hit Points makes this a tough boss fight. Climb up the tree branches in the area to avoid getting surprised by the Bulette’s Deadly Leap attack after it burrows.
The Bulette has a chance to flee from battle, but it does not recover whatever Hit Points it lost during the fight, giving your party a chance to chase down the creature and finish it off after taking a moment to recover.
Stay above the Bulette and force it to leave the ground where it could avoid attacks by burrowing. This monstrosity can only move 9m as its base speed, making it a fairly slow creature you can move away from on your turns. Be careful taking too much time in the fight since the Bulette will leave after a certain amount of rounds, preventing your party from getting the rewards of killing it in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Rewards for Beating Every Underdark Mini-Boss
The rewards from beating Filro the Forgotten are his Simple Robes and Quarterstaff, along with a Scroll of Sleep, an Icy Crystal, and some Scribbled Notes. While the Notes provide some context about the Adamantine Forge, you have to cast Speak with Dead on Filro’s corpse to learn more. The Icy Crystal is an Ingredient item in Baldur’s Gate 3 that can be used to craft a two-handed magic weapon named Mourning Frost.
During the quest “Avenge the Sovereign,” you can have the NPC Glut revive the Bulette as a companion if your party managed to kill the beast.
The Hook Horrors drop basic loot when killed, but the Bulette gives an uncommon item known as the Bloodguzzler Garb. A piece of clothing your party characters could equip, this item has 10 base AC and has the Grievous Retribution ability woven into it. This trait causes any character who wears the Garb to gain the Wrath buff for one turn whenever they take damage from an enemy in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Those who beat Filro the Forgotten and the other mini-bosses in the Underdark will gain lots of experience for their party in Baldur’s Gate 3 and maybe even level-up characters.
