Honor touts its Magic V2 as the thinnest and lightest premium folding smartphone yet, even though the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 has finally risen to vie for that crown today (August 14, 2023). The OEM has responded to this challenge by collaborating with JerryRigEverything to present a unique twist on the teardown video.
Honor must have been seen more than enough flexible-display flagships taken apart on YouTube, as it sent the vlogger Zach Nelson a Magic V2 already broken down into its component parts. Then again, the resulting reverse teardown hinted at improved repairability for the new Magic V-series flagship, as it did indeed successfully go back together again.
On that note, the assembly video also afforded a look at the dual silicon-carbon batteries and titanium hinge to which the Magic V2 owes its new bragging rights, as well as the Bionic vapor chamber for its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 module (which could, in fairness, have been given a thermal paste top-up prior to being replaced).
Nelson found that those components contribute to a mass of 8.3 ounces (~235 grams (g)) for the V2, compared to 8.5 ounces (~241g) for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, and a thickness of 9.9 millimeters (mm) and 13.5mm respectively.
Then again, this reverse JerryRigEverything video did not end with a bend test, meaning we now have to wait to find out if the Magic V2 is as durable as it is refined.
