Hearts on their sleeves! Lionesses Beth England and Rachel Daly both kissed their wristbands after scoring penalties – in a trend started by Sarina Wiegman at the Euros
On Monday night, England’s Lionesses charged through to the quarter final of the Women’s World Cup after triumphing over Nigeria in penalties.
However, eagle-eyed fans may have noticed that both Beth England and Rachel Daly kissed their wristbands in the moments following their goals in Melbourne.
Beth, 29, a Tottenham player who has had limited minutes at this tournament, scored emphatically.
Afterwards, the sporting star was seen reaching her arm up to her face and giving her white wristband a quick peck – in a trend that was started by their coach Sarina Wiegman at the Euros in July 2022.
Along with a black love heart, the handwritten motivational message on Beth’s wristband appears to read: ‘KNOW YOUR WHY!’

Shortly after, Beth’s teammate Rachel Daly, 31, who plays for Aston Villa, scored England’s third penalty.
Celebrating her goal-winning shot, Rachel immediately kissed her wristband – which had ‘DAD’ handwritten on it.
The Lioness lost her father Martyn in September 2021. Speaking to ITV the following year, Rachel explained: ‘He was the reason I played football, going back to birth really. I came out wanting to kick a ball.
‘I don’t think I’d have got that passion for the game if it wasn’t for him.’
The players’ coach Sarina Wiegman began the heartwarming trend during the Euros last summer.
As the Lionesses celebrated their win against Germany, Sarina calmly walked onto the pitch and was seen kissing a bracelet on her right wrist.
Speaking at her post-match press conference, which was interrupted by ecstatic England players singing the chorus of Three Lions, Wiegman paid tribute to her sister, The Times reports.
She said: ‘I’m kissing this little armband. It was my sister’s and she passed away during the build-up to the tournament.

‘I think she was here, she was in the crossbar. She would have been here, she would have been really proud of me and I am proud of her too.’
The Lionesses wore black armbands during their pre-tournament friendly against Belgium on June 16 in a mark of respect to her passing.
Wiegman said she believes their historic win will leave a legacy that stretched beyond football and into society as a whole.
She added: ‘The world will be changed, we know that. When you win the European Championship the world changes.
‘What we have done is just really incredible. I don’t think I really realised what I’d done when I was asked before the game, England is all behind us.
‘We noticed it getting to the stadium, with 90,000 behind us, and over the tournament we’ve had amazing support.’
