Fujifilm GFX100 successor sensor leak indicates 100-MP BSI unit with Sony A6700 readout speeds launching on September 12

More than four years after the release of the original GFX100, and two years after the release of the GFX100S, Fujifilm is rumoured to release a successor to the medium-format mirrorless camera later this year. The suspected release date for the GFX100’s follow-up is September 12, during the Fujifilm X Summit in Sweden. According to a leak shared by Fuji Rumors, the new camera is expected to get an all-new sensor not found in either the GFX100 or GFX100S.

While not much is known about the sensor, the leak claims that it will be based on the same sensor architecture as the Sony A6700 and Sony FX30. The new sensor will also allegedly have a sensor readout speed to surpass the likes of the recently-released Fujifilm X-S20 and Fujifilm’s other higher-end APS-C hybrid cameras.

The readout speed optimisations should hep alleviate some of the severe rolling shutter effects reported in many reviews and round out the camera’s video capabilities. Previous rumours about the Fujifilm GFX100 indicate that it should retain the unique detachable, tilting EVF from its predecessor. Given the high resolution, it’s unclear whether this readout speed optimisation will actually make video recording on the GFX100 any more practical, though.

Along with better video performance, a faster shutter readout should also improve processing speeds, burst shooting rates, and perhaps even autofocus performance. Fujifilm’s decision to go with a non-stacked BSI sensor may come down to costs savings, since the first-generation GFX100 was already a US$6,000 camera.

There has been no indication of pricing for the successor to the GFX100, nor has an official name leaked, but more information will almost certainly surface before the September 12 announcement.
