ASHBURN — The Washington Commanders have their first significant injury of camp.
Defensive lineman David Bada tore his tricep and is awaiting further examination, coach Ron Rivera said Thursday. The injury, presumably season-ending, occurred a day earlier in Wednesday’s session.
Bada, who was born in Germany, had been with the Commanders since 2020 when he joined via the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program. Bada spent most of his first three seasons on Washington’s practice squad with an exempt status, but he was signed to an active contract last December. The 28-year-old appeared in two games last season, playing a combined 27 defensive snaps.
“He’s being examined and we’ll see where that leaves him,” Rivera said.
Left guard Saahdiq Charles is also dealing with a calf injury that has kept him sidelined for the last two days of practice. Asked if the injury could keep Charles out of Washington’s first preseason game next week, Rivera said he thinks Charles is more “day-to-day.”
Charles has been in a competition to become the Commanders’ starter left guard. Though the fourth-year lineman had taken most of the first-team reps, his absence has allowed second-year guard Chris Paul to work with the starters.
