Cadbury announces the return of its Chocolate Coins from September – after nearly a decade off UK shelves

Cadbury fans are in for a treat after the chocolatier announced that a much-loved discontinued product will be back on UK shelves just in time for Christmas.

Cadbury chocolate coins – thick discs of smooth milk chocolate individually wrapped in shiny gold packaging – are back with a bang, ready to spread Christmas cheer as a potential stocking filler, The Sun reports.

The production of the chocolate treat had been suspended for almost a decade – which many fans said had ‘ruined’ their Christmases – but according to the confectioner, it’s making a comeback.

Cadbury announced in October 2014 that they would no longer be making their beloved sacks of chocolate coins, to the surprise of many fans.

The company dropped the bombshell on Twitter, replying to a consumer enquiry with: ‘Chocolate coins have been discontinued however we have lots of other chocolatey treats to try.’

Cadbury’s have announced that a much-loved discontinued product will be hitting the shelves in time for Christmas – after almost a DECADE production had been suspended

At the time, disappointed fans expressed their disapproval on Twitter, with one dramatically tweeting: ‘NOOOOOOOOOOOO This is a horrendous decision and @CadburyUK must reconsider.’

One frustrated parent wrote: ‘How do I explain that to the 5yo and 3yo who adore them? #wrongmove.’

Many others demanded their comeback with tweets and various petitions, but the company argued that the tasty treats weren’t profitable because they could not market them in the ‘Cadbury purple.’

The chocolate maker also said that shoppers had switched to cheaper, own-brand versions sold at supermarkets such as Aldi and Lidl, causing its own sales to decline.

However, the product will be available once more to buy in supermarkets nationwide from September.

The coins will be sold both a 70g festive net for £1.99 or in a 230g decorative, gift tin for £6.99.

However, retailers are free to charge their own prices – so before you hastily rush to stockpile the treats, it’s worth checking the cost.

Katie Hill, junior brand manager for Cadbury, said: ‘If you cast your mind back to 2014, you may remember that Cadbury was breaking hearts across the nation, as we announced the sad discontinuation of our much-loved Chocolate Coins.

‘So we’re thrilled to be able to finally announce we’ll be bringing back this beloved holiday treasure this year – a product which represents festive joy and nostalgia for so many.’

While Sarah Foden, archivist for Cadbury, said the product has a ‘timeless charm’ that captures the joy and excitement of Christmas.

Chocolate coins have long been a Christmas treat and the tradition is thought to have stemmed from Saint Nicholas secretly giving his money away to children in his native Turkey.

The figure, a 4th century bishop we now call Santa Claus, was shy so he decided to drop his purse down a chimney.

It landed in a pair of stockings a little girl had hung up to dry and the tradition was born.

The chocolate coins haven’t been the only product Cadbury’s have pulled which has resulted in uproar, as the chocolatier have also recently discontinued another fan favourite.

Cadbury discontinued its individual Dairy Milk Treatsize Buttons in July – leaving some UK customers gutted, including a parent whose autistic son will struggle to eat other chocolate in the product’s absence.
