Koichi Futatsumata’s elegant and minimalist chair, known by the name ‘Sand Chair,’ is an excellent example of contemporary Japanese design that seeks to strike a good balance between form and function. The Sand Chair is definitely visually appealing with its no-frills silhouette and clean lines. The piece was designed as part of “Tendo Makko’s Japanese Modern/80 Project celebrating the 80th anniversary of the furniture brand.”
It might be surprising to some that the name ‘Sand’ doesn’t actually refer to beach sand but to the ‘sandwiched’ components that form the structure of the minimalist chair. The piece draws inspiration from backless seating which allows users to sit from both the front and back.
Koichi Futatsumata designs the Sand Chair out of solid white beech and maple plywood.
