Summary
- Only a few actors have been lucky enough to be in multiple billion-dollar franchises, with large ensemble adventure films like the MCU and Fast and Furious series allowing actors to jump between series.
- Some actors, such as Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldaña, have been in three different billion-dollar franchises, including Jurassic World, the MCU, and Mario for Pratt, and Avatar, the MCU, and the Pirates of the Caribbean series for Saldaña.
- To qualify for this list, the actor must have been in non-MCU billion-dollar grossers as well, cameos/post-credit appearances do not count, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe only counts as one franchise.
Fewer than 60 movies have crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, meaning only a handful of actors have been in billion-dollar franchises, but some are lucky enough to be in more than one. Many of the highest-grossing franchises are large ensemble adventure films, like those in the MCU or Fast and Furious series, allowing several actors to jump between series. Some actors have even been lucky enough to be in three different billion-dollar franchises.
To qualify for this list, the actor must have actually been in movies that made $1 billion+ in both franchises, and cameos/post-credit appearances do not count. The Marvel Cinematic Universe also only counts as one franchise, so appearing in both Black Panther and Avengers: Endgame does not count. The actor must have been in a non-MCU billion-dollar grosser as well. Here are all 33 actors with two different $1 billion movie franchises.
33 Chris Pratt – Jurassic World & The MCU & Mario
With the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie earlier this year, Chris Pratt is now one of only a few actors with three different billion-dollar franchises. Pratt stars as Owen in the Jurassic World trilogy, all three of which managed to break a billion, while also being a mainstay of the MCU. While none of the Guardians of the Galaxy films hit a billion, Pratt had significant roles in the later two Avengers films, both of which were massive hits.
32 Andy Serkis – Star Wars & The MCU & The Lord of the Rings
Andy Serkis is another actor who has managed to be in three different billion-dollar franchises. Gollum, arguably still Serkis’ most iconic role, was in both Middle-Earth films that cracked a billion, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Serkis also appeared in two MCU movies, Avengers: Age of UItron and Black Panther, and two-Star Wars movies, The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, all of which passed the milestone.
31 Zoe Saldaña – Avatar & The MCU
Not only is Zoe Saldaña in two huge film series, but of the six highest-grossing films of all time, she stars in four of them. Saldaña’s break-out role was as Neytiri in Avatar, a role she reprised for its massive sequel. Like Chris Pratt, she is also a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, meaning she was featured in the two biggest Avengers films. With more Avatar sequels on the way, Saldaña’s place in box office history will only solidify. Saldaña was also in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, but not in any entry that made over $1 billion.
30 Ariana Greenblatt – The MCU & Barbie
Zoe Saldaña is not the only actor who has played Gamora to have two billion-dollar franchises. Ariana Greenblatt, who played the younger version of the character in Avengers: Infinity War, has recently joined the club as she also had a major role in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. It is quite impressive that Greenblatt has already had these massive hits at such a young age, and her career is one to look out for.
29 Vin Diesel – Fast and Furious & The MCU
The Fast and Furious franchise started as mid-budget action thrillers, but over the course of 20 years have ballooned into worldwide box office sensations. Two of them, Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious, passed a billion dollars, and franchise lead Vin Diesel is another Guardians of the Galaxy member. While Diesel only provides the voice for Groot and has very limited dialogue, he is still in the films enough for it to count.
28 Samuel L. Jackson – Star Wars & The MCU & The Incredibles
Samuel L. Jackson is a screen legend, and it is not that surprising that he has managed to star in three different franchises that passed $1billion. His character of Nick Fury has appeared in 11 MCU films so far, six of which have passed $1billon; all four Avengers films, Captain Marvel, and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Jackson also stars as Mace Windu in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and as Frozone in Incredibles 2, both of which made well over $1billion.
27 Michelle Rodriguez – Avatar & Fast and Furious
In 2009 Michelle Rodriguez was killed off in two different movies. She heroically sacrificed herself at the end of Avatar, the highest-grossing movie of all time, and her character of Letty was killed as the inciting incident in Fast & Furious. Luckily for her, the Fast Saga was able to bring her back to life just in time for her to star in its two billion-dollar grossers. Now it is just a question of whether the Avatar series will bring her back into the fold.
26 Warwick Davis – Harry Potter & Star Wars
Since he played the role of Wicket the Ewok at 11 years old, Warwick Davis has been a legend of fantasy cinema and geek culture. While Davis has led his own franchises, it is his supporting work in Harry Potter and Star Wars series that has given him his billion-dollar films. Davis has been in every Star Wars film to pass $1 billion, and while only one Harry Potter movie managed to gross that much, The Deathly Hallows Part 2, Davis had not one but two roles in that movie.
25 Shirley Henderson – Harry Potter & Star Wars
Shirley Henderson may not have the most recognizable name, but she does have an instantly recognizable voice and two iconic roles in billion-dollar hits. Henderson is best known for her role as the ghost Moaning Myrtle in the Harry Potter series, but she is also a recent member of the Star Wars universe, voicing the role of Babu Frik in The Rise of Skywalker. With both franchises, it was the last entry in the series that got her into the billion-dollar club.
24 Dominic Monaghan – Lord of the Rings & Star Wars
While best known for his TV work on Lost, Dominic Monaghan also joined the Star Wars saga in The Rise of Skywalker, thus making him eligible for this list. Monaghan also plays the hobbit Merry in the Lord of the Rings films, the last of which grossed more than a billion. While Monaghan is also a mutant in the X-Men universe, those films never managed to hit a billion.
23 Laura Dern – Star Wars & Jurassic Park
Being the daughter of Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern, Laura Dern was always going to be Hollywood royalty, but incredible work as an actor has only solidified that. She also has several box office hits to her name, with both Jurassic Park and its legacy sequel Jurassic World: Dominion hitting $1 billion. Dern is also a part of the Star Wars universe playing Admiral Holdo in The Last Jedi.
22 Benicio Del Toro – Star Wars & The MCU
Another Last Jedi star, Del Toro joined the franchise as the shady DJ in 2017. Then only a few months later, Del Toro also appeared as the Collector in Avengers: Infinity War. He went from having no billion-dollar movies to two in the span of just five months. Del Toro is a great actor and was clearly having a blast with both these roles, so his place in box office history is well deserved.
21 Lupita Nyong’o – Star Wars & The MCU
Lupita Nyong’o won an Oscar with her first feature film role in 12 Years a Slave. That is quite an impressive feat to pull off, but Nyong’o managed to follow it up by staring in two separate billion-dollar franchises. She stars as Nakia in the Black Panther films but also lends her voice and motion capture to Maz Kanata in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, all of which passed $1 billion.
20 Tyrese Gibson – Fast and Furious & Transformers
First known for his music career, Tyrese Gibson has successfully made the transition into action superstar. He has been in two separate car-related spectacle series, that have grossed over $1 billion. Film-wise, Tyrese is best known for his character of Roman Peirce in the Fast and Furious series, but he was also a reoccurring player in the first three Transformers movies. While Gibson was not in every billion-dollar Transformers movie, he was in Dark of the Moon, making him eligible for this list.
19 Alan Tudyk – Transformers & Star Wars & Frozen
Alan Tudyk is a Julliard-trained actor, so it is quite amusing that he is best known for his silly comedic relief characters. Those silly roles however have led him to massive box office success. Tudyk also starred in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, as the personal assistant to John Turturro’s agent Simmons. He also lent his voice and motion capture to the Star Wars spin-off Rogue One as the sarcastic droid K2SO. Disney’s animation team has also been keeping Tudyk around as he has been in almost all of their recent output, including the two Frozen films that both crossed $1 billion.
18 James Earl Jones – Star Wars & The Lion King
There is no voice as iconic as that of James Earl Jones. While he has been the voice of Darth Vader since 1977, only his appearance in Rogue One was able to pass $1 billion. Jones was also the voice of the patriarchal Mufasa in both versions of The Lion King. While the original version of The Lion King is just shy of $1 billion, the remake managed to clear it and then some.
17 John Kani – The MCU & The Lion King
John Kani has had a long and varied career spanning several continents and mediums. Originally from South Africa, Kani is a celebrated play write and stage actor, but he has recently found great success in Hollywood blockbusters. Kani played the father to T’Challa in both Captain America: Civil War and Black Panther, while also lending his voice to Rafiki in The Lion King remake.
16 Keegan-Michael Key – Mario & The Lion King
Since Key and Peele ended, Keegan-Michael Key has kept busy playing supporting roles in several box office hits. His two billion-dollar hits both come from his voice work as he is yet another member of The Lion King cast as he played the villainous hyena Kamari. Key was also in this year’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie as the friendly Toad.
15 Seth Rogen – Mario & The Lion King
Fellow comedian Seth Rogen has the same two billion-dollar franchises as Keegan-Michael Key. While Rogen is a prolific screenwriter and comedy star on his own terms, his biggest hits have come from reinterpreting beloved animated characters. Rogen provided the voice of Pumba in The Lion King and the voice of Donkey Kong in The Super Mario Bros. Movies.
14 Florence Kasumba – The Lion King & The MCU
The fourth and final Lion King star on this list, Florence Kasumba may be the lowest-profile actor to have multiple movies in the billion-dollar club. The Ugandan/German actress voiced the evil hyena Shenzi in the blockbuster remake. However, Kasumba is best known for being a member of the Black Panther’s Dora Milaje in the MCU.
