Summary
- The director of the upcoming Blue Beetle film, Ángel Manuel Soto, initially pitched a Bane project to Warner Bros, revealing a desire to explore the character’s origin story.
- Though the director’s comments are vague, they may be teasing that there were already plans for Bane elsewhere.
- Bane has not been mentioned in relation to The Batman franchise until now, but based on Soto’s comments, it seems that Matt Reeves and his team might be considering including Bane in the Elseworlds continuity of the films.
One of Bruce Wayne’s greatest villains might be on his way to The Batman universe as Matt Reeves continues the Elseworlds-based franchise. In 2022, Robert Pattinson became the latest Hollywood star to step into the legacy of Batman as he took on the iconic role in The Batman, a reboot for the Caped Crusader. The reboot focused on a younger iteration of the Dark Knight, exploring his path as a crime fighter during his second year.
With the massive success of The Batman, a sequel is in the works, with Reeves set to return to direct and write. While story details are being kept under wraps, there are a lot of theories on where Reeves’ The Batman – Part II will take Bruce Wayne next and what foes he will face along the way. However, some recent quotes in relation to The Batman may be foreshadowing that one of Bruce’s most dangerous antagonists is getting introduced in the future.
Blue Beetle Director’s Original DC Pitch Hints At The Batman’s Potential Bane Future
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Blue Beetle filmmaker Ángel Manuel Soto spoke about how he got the gig to direct the 2023 summer adventure. The opportunity to direct the Jaime Reyes-led film came after Soto had initially tried to pitch a Bane project to Warner Bros. Having “always wanted to explore the origin story of Bane,” Soto revealed that “[He] came in with that idea [about a Bane movie], but that was Matt Reeves’ universe with The Batman, and I don’t know what’s going to happen now with this new regime.“
This is the first time Bane has ever been brought up in relation to what Reeves is doing with The Batman franchise. Based on Soto’s comments, it would appear that perhaps Reeves and his creative team are eying a place for Bane in the Elseworlds continuity. This would be the first time since Tom Hardy’s incarnation in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises that Bane was getting used again in live-action. To this point, Reeves hasn’t said anything about Bane, but perhaps it is one of the things that they are working on and keeping on the down low.
Matt Reeves’ The Batman Universe Timeline Explained
As James Gunn is building his DC Universe, The Batman franchise is just getting started as Reeves has multiple projects in the works. While The Batman – Part II is eying a 2025 release date, the filmmaker is also bringing continuity to the small screen through Max. Colin Farrell is reprising the role of Oswald Cobblepot in The Penguin, a spinoff series that will expand the DC villain’s mythology within The Batman universe, while Reeves has also been working on an Arkham Asylum-related TV show. With villains seemingly getting a bigger spotlight in The Batman universe, there is no reason why Bane couldn’t get his own spinoff project or even show up in one of the upcoming shows.
