Even Ken actor Ryan Gosling doesn’t know what Kenergy means, even after using the term a few times while speaking about his character in the lead up to the hit movie’s release.
In an interview with ExtraTV, conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Gerwig weighed in on the term and gave her input on what she thinks Kenergy means. The Barbie movie director revealed that she and Gosling still discuss this term regularly and believe Kenergy could represent men who support women with an open hand and confidence. I sent him a video the other day of something that I felt had extreme Kenergy, and he was like, ‘That is Kenner in the wild.’ I think there’s self-actualized Kenergy, which is where Ken gets to at the end of the movie. Men in their sort of strength and confidence, supporting women with an open hand. There’s a feeling of, like, just that good Kenergy.

The Kenergy Debate Explained
During the Warner Bros. Discovery panel at CinemaCon, Gosling discussed how he wasn’t entirely convinced that he would be a good fit as Ken in Gerwig’s Barbie. He initially revealed that he “doubted” his Kenergy and that Margot Robbie and Gerwig “conjured this out of me somehow.” This led many audience members to want to find out what he meant by “Kenergy,” to which, once the official press tour for the movie began, many actors had their own interpretation on what it meant.
Other actors, including Issa Rae’s President Barbie, don’t believe Kenergy has much meaning. When speaking to Yahoo, Rae bluntly said that Kenergy is “a whole lot of nothing,” while Robbie didn’t know how to articulate the term. Some actors seem to have a more philosophical and planned-out answer, while others don’t think too much about it and believe it doesn’t have actual meaning.
It seems that, even after the release of Gerwig’s Barbie, the term Kenergy still hasn’t been properly defined and is left to be interpreted through the eyes of the audience.
