The newest third generation of the Starlink Wi-fi router has been making the rounds in select few households which SpaceX is quick to point out have gotten it by invitations only. The testers got access to the Starlink Gen 3 router early, as the FCC just recently approved it for use as Wi-fi 6 equipment.
According to the filing, besides the upgraded Wi-fi 6 (802.11ax) connectivity speeds, the new Starlink router offers two extra Ethernet ports tucked under a lid at the rear of the router. Currently, the Starlink kits ship with a slower Wi-fi 5 router, but with the constant launch of new satellites SpaceX has been adding capacity at an ever-increasing pace resulting in higher Starlink download speeds.
Moreover, the new router is designed to connect to the new Starlink V2 satellites that SpaceX just launched 22 more of yesterday. Surprisingly enough, those who have been anointed to test the Starlink Gen 3 Wi-fi 6 router should not only be waiting for a special invitation by SpaceX, but will also be required to pay US$200 for the privilege to purchase it if they want to take part in the tryouts, says SpaceX:
At this time, the ability to purchase the Starlink Gen 3 router is by invitation only to a small group of early customers in the US. We are unable to accomomdate order requests from customers who did not receive an invitation. Stay tuned for updates on the wider release of this product!
This tips the standalone Starlink Gen 3 Wi-fi 6 router price when it is launched widely, though these things usually come in a US$500 bundle together with the dish and other Starlink satellite Internet connectivity paraphernalia.
