The Panasonic Lumix S5 has been on sale for a while on Amazon, but the Lumix S 20-60 mm lens kit has come down in price even further since the 22% discount we previously wrote about. Amazon now has the Lumix S5 priced at US$1,597.99 when combined with the Lumix S 20-60 mm f/3.5-F5.6 L-mount lens, or just US$1,297.99 for the body only.
The Lumix S5 packs a lot of punch in a relatively compact, ergonomic body, performing particularly well for hybrid shooters and small video production teams. Panasonic has equipped the Lumix S5 with a host of flagship features, including 6.5-stop, five-axis in-body image stabilisation, full-frame, 10-bit, 4:2:2, 4K video at 30p, and a number of colour modes, including 10-bit V-Log recording for those who want to dabble in editing. Unfortunately for the Lumix S5, 4K 60p video is only possible with an APS-C (1.5x) crop.
A USB Type-C port with charging support and separate 3.5 mm headphone and microphone jacks and dual SD card slots put the cherry on top when it comes to videography usability.
It’s also a perfectly capable photography camera, thanks to its 24-MP sensor that balances low-light performance and resolution while delivering great dynamic range. The combination of the sensor and the Venus Engine give it great JPEGs straight out of camera and a reasonable seven FPS burst mode.
Ultimately, while the Panasonic Lumix S5 isn’t going to blow anyone away with its video or photography or video trickery, it’s definitely a solid entry into the full-frame mirrorless world, especially when discounted to the current price. The L-mount also offers a lot of variety when it comes to lenses, allowing users to build a diverse lens selection from different manufacturers.

My interest in tech started in high school, rooting and flashing my Motorola Defy, but I really fell down the rabbit hole when I realised I could overclock the i7 930 in my Gigabyte pre-built PC. This tinkering addiction eventually lead me to study product design in university. I think tech should improve the lives of the people using it, no matter the field. I like to read and write about laptops, smartphones, software and trends in technology.
